• Possible Downtime Alert

I am working to migrate THR from the current cluster to a new one. I would like to get this done before the weekend, but it's unclear what the timeframe will be, as testing is still ongoing. As I am writing this the new (rebuilt) host is doing a burn-in to ensure that everything will keep running under load.

When the migration happens users will see a Cloudflare message indicatating it cannot connect to the server. This is expected, and depending on how the migration goes this may last from 30 minutes to 3 hours - I won't know more until testing the various migration options is complete and I have finalized the plan.

More information is available in this thread.

As always, thanks so much for your patience.

On an AR platform, where do you like to put a light and how do you like to activate it?

10 o'clock if I'm using a button on the back of the light, 2 o'clock if I'm using a tape switch. On shorty guns, I like throwing a TLR-1 on the top rail and using the factory toggle. It pairs nicely with a backwards MBUS front sight.

WHOA - Jump starting your car … using a rifle barrel?

My buddies dad has the "Franken-500" Mossberg. Not because it's a mishmash of parts, but because it fell off the backseat driving across a field and fell on the deep cycle battery on the floor boards and arc welded a half inch bolt onto the barrel. The bolt stayed welded to the barrel, like a...

What show was it? That might be able to help narrow it down. They almost even got the scope mounted correctly!

Help me pick a Gen 2 American Ranch Rifle!

For the range and purpose involved, they'd all work well. 300blk might be the easiest to keep fed, and would make a real fun suppressor host. The other two would do better pulling double duty as varmint rifles if you ever take him coyote hunting. No wrong answers here.

A well worn question I am sure, but is a Colt AR worth paying a little more?

What is your source for this? Not that I don't trust you, I'd just like the source to show some other people.

Is a 1994 Olympic Arms MFR AR-15 a decent pick up?

In Oly's defense, it seems like a very large part of the market had a similar bunch of issues. Mismatched recievers/barrel extensions, questionable metallurgy, improperly staked gas keys, oddly sized gas ports, random "civilian/semi-auto" spec parts... The market was a very different thing back...

Is a 1994 Olympic Arms MFR AR-15 a decent pick up?

They had a pretty rough reputation. They seemed to be considered bottom of the barrel.

    280ai vs 7rm vs 7prc

As a bit of a penny pinching reloader, I'd personally pick up the 280AI. I don't like dealing with belted cartridges, and don't need all the extra strum und drang of the PRC. If I was concerned with having the latest and greatest, I'd probably grab the 7PRC. Or if I wanted to use the same rifle...

    Rangefinder recommendation?

I'd used a few older, lower end LRF's and was aware of their limitations but still wanted one with expectations that it'd only be good to a couple hundred yards unless I wanted to spend alot of money. I picked up a Sig Kilo2000 on sale for about $250. I was not at all prepared for that level...

    Federals new cartridge any guesses?

Before someone inevitably steps in and claims "Well, 30-06 gets that bump too" if I'm going to step up to a larger action size for more performance, I'm just going to skip 30-06 and go straight to 300wm and get a performance increase that'll actually make a difference.

    Leupold Illuminated FireDot Reticle Issue

If the two scopes were bought close to each other in time and location, it's entirely possible there was a bad batch of accelerometers and this is atypical of the models usual performance.

    S&W 1854 - Experiences?

That's playing heavily into what I'm looking at for my next lever action. Probably end up with a 44 of some flavor since I've got a few K brass and bullets and no 44 to feed them into.

    Mosin 35 whelen

You could probably get it reamed out to a 35x54R wildcat of some sort. Reliability would almost certainly be less hassle. I wouldn't be surprised if there's an established wildcat out there similar to what you're looking for. Edited to add: 9x54R, or sometimes referred to as 35x54R or 35...

Rifles that aren't as horrible to shoot without hearing protection

I went with a Griffin Bushwhacker 46 and run their Taper mounts, but same idea. I can swap endcaps (I also have a 30cal one) and since it's user serviceable I can even run cast bullets and 22lr through it, although it looks a little wonky on a tiny 22.

PSA AR Upper - FSB Pins Sticking Out

That should be right, if the holes were drilled properly at least. They might be drilled a little shallow, and that might be all the further the taper pins will go in. I'd give them a few good taps to see if they go in any further. If they won't budge, it means they're tight, and it's just a...

PSA AR Upper - FSB Pins Sticking Out

I'd try tapping them in myself, if you have the capability. Annoying, but that's the name of the game with $200 uppers, wether people want to admit it or not. Generally fine, but may have "some assembly required" .

What optic do you run on your AR15?

I had one. I only got rid of it because I changed the purpose of the rifle it was on. Excellent optic. Very flexible mounting system too, which was a great feature to have. I would buy another in a heartbeat if I had a need it scratched.
