• Possible Downtime Alert

I am working to migrate THR from the current cluster to a new one. I would like to get this done before the weekend, but it's unclear what the timeframe will be, as testing is still ongoing. As I am writing this the new (rebuilt) host is doing a burn-in to ensure that everything will keep running under load.

When the migration happens users will see a Cloudflare message indicatating it cannot connect to the server. This is expected, and depending on how the migration goes this may last from 30 minutes to 3 hours - I won't know more until testing the various migration options is complete and I have finalized the plan.

More information is available in this thread.

As always, thanks so much for your patience.

Holy thread necromancy, Batman! Not much odder I suppose than describing a directed-energy weapon as a "rifle".

Ever noticed anti-gun bias on Wikipedia?

+1 Since using/editing Wikipedia regularly, what I've noticed is the extent to which so many other information sources (books, newspapers, TV, etc) need [citation needed] or [not NPOV] tags stuck on them.

Brit Rifles From 1880 Massacre Found

I don't know much about the British Empire's involvement in Afghanistan, but IIRC they were not there to steal their land (which wasn't particularly productive) nor their resources (which were minmal). Rather, their interest was strategic. If they weren't there, the Russians would be, and...

Animals - natural self defense mechanism

Regarding bees: Another interesting thing about bees (and wasps and ants) is that their method of reproduction is quite weird at the genetic/chromosome level. I can't remember the details of how it works, but the result is that worker bees are more closely related to their sisters than...

    What's the lethal/dangerous range of a shotgun?

I think you can get permission for substantially more than that, if its .22 rimfire. Also, sometimes ignorance on the part of those granting the license can work in your favour. One member of my rifle club got permission to possess x hundred rounds of 7.62x51mm, and the same quantity of .308...

    What's the lethal/dangerous range of a shotgun?

A few days ago, the police in London shot and killed a man who had been shooting at them (and before that, into neighbours' houses). http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7391858.stm http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime/article3894659.ece As can be seen from the Times...

BBC Anti-American Bias in Finland School Shooting Report

Is that actually the case, though? I'm pretty sure that was how it was supposed to be, but in reality, doesn't NI just go into the same pot that all the other taxes do, out of which all expenditure comes? Can you say for sure that the cost of the NHS is simply the NI you pay? I would...

BBC Anti-American Bias in Finland School Shooting Report

Seeing as no-one else has answered, there is information about UK firearms law here: http://www.met.police.uk/firearms-enquiries/firearms.htm In short: Automatics - no. Semiautos - no, except for shotguns and .22 rimfire. Handguns - no, unless the barrel is >30m (1ft) long, and the whole gun is...

My Convo with a European Anti

Admittedly I've never gone around asking people "If someone was trying to rape/murder your mother, would you be willing to shoot the perp to stop him?" But I am sure that if I did, answers like that given by this girl would be a very, very tiny minority. Even in Europe.

How should I respond to an anti from europe?

Regarding Dunblane/Hamilton: I've read the official inquiry (well, the one that was made public). It listed a whole load of things that might have been signs that Hamilton shouldn't have been allowed to own guns. These "might be" signs were a bizarre mixture of things that to my mind...

Meanwhile, back in the socialist paradise of Gun Control

I don't think you can really define "socialist" as simply meaning "government runs everything, keeps most for itself/cronies, and hands out enough to the masses to keep them docile". Now, I accept that socialism often ends up with that result (which is one of the reasons I'm not a...

    The UN vs. our guns

The UN doesn't have troops though. For the UN to carry out any sort of military invention requires: * The member states to agree to make an intervention * One or more member states to agree to provide the troops * One or more member states to agree to pay for the operation. (And the first...
