    Practice vs training

Yes, semantics has a lot to do with it. Military and police organizations call just about all activities intended to teach new skills or maintain proficiency with skills one already has; TRAINING. I generally say that training has one critical component evaluation. If you go to the range and...

    No safe place

I assumed he was referring to crimes like robbery, battery etc. that were stranger on stranger which is why I qualified my answer with domestics and bar fights. The time I stopped an assault on a fellow officer was working a detail at the Summer Fest. At the time it was the only open air...

    No safe place

I stopped an attack on a fellow officer. Never on a private citizen unless you want to count breaking up domestics and bar fights.

    No safe place

Working in a rural area I didn't know anyone who wouldn't respond. We lived by the mutual aid agreement here. If a citizen needed help someone was coming. If it was urgent and the officer(s) from the jurisdiction the complaint was made in you might get an officer from a neighboring...

    No safe place

There is no duty to protect any specific individual. LE protects society as a whole. That's the gist of the Supreme Court decsion.

Detroit self-defense shooting kills bystander, no charges filed.

Kind of depends on his insurance coverage. Often a suit is filed and the attorney seeks financial information during discovery. Insurance coverage, property owned free and clear will figure into that decision.

    Fanny packs usage

The conversation has deteriorated into how one looks while wearing a fanny pack and if that is appropriate instead of the self defense applications. This one is done.

Man fires at juveniles breaking into cars, gets 1st Degree Murder Charge for his trouble

Many states allow the use of deadly force to stop a forcible felony. Burglary to a motor vehicle isn't a forcible felony. Here are the crimes Illinois defines as forcible felonies: (720 ILCS 5/2-8) (from Ch. 38, par. 2-8) Sec. 2-8. "Forcible felony". "Forcible felony" means treason, first...

Man fires at juveniles breaking into cars, gets 1st Degree Murder Charge for his trouble

Let's keep the conversation focused on the issues that are on topic here. Confronting thieves, firing "warning shots" etc. We can't do anything here about the current environment. We can discuss how to survive it.

"There's no such thing as combat shooting"

There is still a difference between military close combat and a civilian self defense encounter. Unless the private citizen goes everywhere as a member of a trained team and the law in your state permits the same ROE as in Iraq or Afghanistan there is little to compare the two. It’s the same...

    Home defense scenario

I apologize for offending your sensibilities by injecting realism into your fantasy. Yes there are all kinds of videos, many from places like Brazil where things are somewhat different than in middle Tennessee or the U.S. as a whole. The reason I said that is there is no context to those...

    Home defense scenario

Are you or someone in your household in the recreational pharmaceutical business? Is it widely known or rumored that you keep a large amount of cash or jewels in your home? Are you or someone in your household romantically involved with someone with gang affiliations or is psychotic? Are you...

"There's no such thing as combat shooting"

Unfortunately there are still a lot of myths in the training community. I was chided by my chief for shooting a perfect score on the absurdly easy State of Illinois LE Qualification Course. "You should always throw one or two out so a perfect score isn't used against you in court if you miss in...

"There's no such thing as combat shooting"

Please explain why you believe that someone has to have been shot at in order to teach the mechanics of shooting. Does one have to have combat experience to teach sight alignment? How about trigger control? More advanced techniques like shooting while moving? How about drawing from...

    Security Tip

Did you know you can have Google blur the image of your home on Google Maps and Google Earth? It’s a simple process. Just put your address into Google Maps and when it brings up the image of your home on Street View click on report an issue and ask them to blur the image of your home. They...

I have a question regarding the shooting of our former president. I don't know where to put it?

There really isn't anyplace that would be on topic on THR, We don't allow political discussions.

"There's no such thing as combat shooting"

I don't know where you trained but it's certainly not true of "most people" I know. I start my students out on a 3x5 note card. Even the Army starts with the ability to shoot a 4 cm group at 25 meters.
