I use my steel for tactical pistol AND long range rifle. 15 yds to 1400yds. My ears are fine though, and I have heard my full size silhouette at 1400yds on a still morning. My main motivation is the aural satisfaction brought about by the harmonic resonance of the hardened ferrous metal when...
Most helpful post award!
You can't see my mounting setup beyond the carriage bolt and fire hose, but it sounds like I'm on the right track according to your "small area of contact" theory. I have several extra thick 3/8 washers on the back side of the plate, then I have a fender washer on each...
Here's my stand. Just got it off of Amazon. Got everything hung after dark. I'll come back out tomorrow and do some ring tests.

I am only using ar500 plate. Mostly using 3/8" but a have couple pieces of 1/2" and now some 1/4" coming in the mail.
I did think of something that will be easy to try. I'm going to try and get some vinyl hose and try to get it in the mounting holes and see if it will let the gongs ring more...
Aside from shooting magnum loads, how do you get that nice "tuning fork" sound from your steel targets? I have used shepherd's hooks from the garden section with some good success, but it seems that when using chain or fire hose it dampens the great vibration sound that nice thin AR plate sends...
I am going to tune down my Bullseye load to 4.5 gr and see how I like it. If I were using brand new brass each time, then I might push it back up a bit.
All I have ever used in 40 is Bullseye from two 8# kegs my dad gave me from when he used to shoot a bunch and load back in the early/mid 90s...
Sportsmans warehouse has both powders you need, albeit in 1 lb servings...

He kept on shooting! Doing fine thanks. We shot for about three hours that day. The kaboom happened earlier in the range session.
Regarding the glock bulge, I checked for that first thing. No sign of it. I mostly shoot my glock 22 and load more rounds of 40 than anything else. I run a lone...
Good point.
It may have been the case that the brass had been work hardened and cracked at the mouth the last time it was shot. That could have caused the case to loosely grip the bullet and slide back good and far, putting further stresss on the already brittle web/head.
Shooting my Glock 22 (40 S&W) with 5.0gr bullseye in front of a home cast 175 TC and got one that blew smoke and soot and spit brass. I found the piece of brass, and it had a chunk missing at the base or near the web and there was a hairline crack near the case mouth. I also found a little chunk...
Anyone ever try using hearing aides as ear protection when out hunting in the field? I've noticed that there are some amplified hearing protection options but over the ear muffs interfere with my cheek weld on my stock and the purpose built amplified hearing protection that goes in-ear that I...
Haven't read the whole thread, but I just put a serious pock mark in my (expensive) AR500 full size silhouette when I hit it with a 95 gr V-Max out of my 260 rem @110 yds. I'd hesitate to shoot either of those rounds at any steel at that yardage if I expected to get good use out of it before...
