Look for an old Star Model F 22LR, preferably with the longer barrel.
SOME semi-automatics can fire without a magazine in it, many cannot unless it has been modified to remove a safety.

I like 38S&W, enjoy how accurate it is, how easy it is to return to POA and in fact the nice old guns that were chambered in 38S&W or 38/200.
But I only dry fire using snap caps.
They were nice. And there were some really great WonderNines.
At 3-5 yards I cannot imagine not having all shots within the 9 ring of a standard 5 dot target. With either hand or even either hand singularly.
