I've only been in one situation where I really needed a gun to change the outcome of the confrontation. A 340PD would have been nice, but no possibility of a CCW then.
First handgun I bought, cheap West Hurley AO 1911. Unreliable out of the box. After new mags, polishing the feed ramp, and tuning the extractor, I'll put this up against any other gun for reliability.
I read a piece once, I believe it was on Barfcom, by someone who claimed to be an engineer who was knowledgeable about spring fatigue. His claim was that spring fatigue was not caused by static compression but by repeated cycling from compression to decompression. He documented his claims well...
I think they use the term because they know nothing about firearms and parrot what they are told or just pull something out of the air. Many years ago when one local PD was transitioning from revolvers to pistols, a reporterette described them as "fully loaded Glock assault revolvers".
Interesting thread. I've only had one encounter where ANY gun would have been helpful. This being NJ, a CCW was, at that time, a pipe dream. Had I had a gun he might have run away and things might have ended differently.
My house gun. West Hurley Auto Ordnance 1911 because it was cheap and money was tight then. Problematic from day 1. Learned about quality magazines, polishing feed ramps, and tuning extractors. 100% with any ammo today.
1911. First line of defense is quality doors, quality locks, and reinforced striker plates. They would have to make a lot of noise getting in then decide if they would rather run back out and try to elude police or come at me and get shot COM at least twice.
For the same reasons I bought a Mossberg Maverick. It got the best reviews of all the "budget" shotguns. Tested it with all sorts of miscellaneous shells collected over the years. No issues.
Were there ever good deals at gun shows? I never found any. Prices went from slightly too much to what is this guy smoking. I bought some things because I was there and the price wasn't too bad.
