For the most part, yes, it was only magnums that had recessed cylinders. .38 Specials prior to 1982 for example had pinned barrels but not recessed cylinders. The only magnum made before 1982 that wasn't P&R'ed to my knowledge was the Model 586/686. Introduced in 1980, it was never P&R'ed.
