Rebarrel Job: Long or Short Action Needed for .257 Roberts?

I've used a few ER Shaw barrels and have one of the early MkVIIs in 300 Win Mag, never been disappointed.

Rebarrel Job: Long or Short Action Needed for .257 Roberts?

I've thought for a while that the 257 Roberts would be perfect in a mid length action like an M48 Yugo Mauser or an M24 FN...

    Fire forming brass

I used to fireform 8mm Gibbs out of 30-06 brass with a little Red Dot and cases plugged with a little toilet paper. Don't bother anymore, just punch the neck out to 35 and set the shoulder with the Gibbs sizer and go. Of course I don't EVER do this with a compressed load or anything that would...

    Using 8mm-06 data for 8x64s

The cases are similarly shaped and have almost identical capacity, thinking it should be a 1:1 comparison. Hodgdon has some pretty stout 8mm-06 loadings with Accurate Powders in their data center and I have a fairly decent supply of 2700. Looks to be a good place to start, I'll be using...

    good inexpensive scope?

Honestly on a .22…on a budget, Burris Droptine rimfire 3-9x40. For a few more bucks, Vortex Diamondback rimfire 2-7.

Have you purchased anything gun related in the last three days?

Just ordered a Burris FFii from Natchez, figured I'd get one more before the supply dries up.

    Shaw Barrel: Yea or Nay?

If you're set on a rebarrel, you're good to go with ER Shaw, they do nice work. Their bluing is first rate too, if you want a nice finish on it.

    Single Stage Press Advice

I've got 2 single stage presses on my bench, a LEE Classic Cast and a Lyman Orange Crusher. Usually size on the Lyman and Seat with the LEE. Either would be fine by itself. ANY of the well established single stage presses will most likely give you good service.

    Gun Loyalty?

I think, that to some extent, we are a product of how we were introduced to "big" rifles. I grew up on a small dairy farm, been hunting with my dad since I was a little kid. Got my first 22 in 1987 at age 12(Ruger 10/22). Dad didn't think we needed to hunt anything bigger than small game...

Facing reality(confessions of an 8mm fan)...

It can be trued up and recarburized, not really cost effective. Better off just buying a commercial receiver. Either way your headspace will probably be off.

Rifle isn’t functioning quite like I’d like, not an ammunition problem. Bolt lift is a little off, suspect beginning of lug setback.

Facing reality(confessions of an 8mm fan)...

I just built a 30/06 M98 a few months ago, have not been happy with it so far, bolt seems too stiff. Been thinking about robbing the stock and trigger for the next project and just parting it out. I do not make this decision lightly, I've been a big fan of the 8mm bore for years and, I just...

    35 Whelen barrel

Send it to ER Shaw, they will put one of their barrels on very reasonably. I've got one of their Mark VII rifles, and the build is first rate. On a side note, I have PacNor doing a rifle right now, but I only looked elsewhere because Shaw doesn't do an 8x68s. I've used several of their...

    Hawke Scope Opinions

Put a Vantage 4x32 on the 8x57 I put together for my nephew. Seems decent enough, not quite as bright optically as the last Weaver K4s, but that could be the difference from the 38mm Weaver and the 32mm objective on the Hawke. Adjustments were pretty solid seemed to be accurate. Has stayed...
