combine different size shot in one shell

This is exactly true. The army used buck-and-ball as late as the Civil War (not everyone had rifle-muskets).

    Available scopes for .17 HMR?

I have a BSA Sweet 17 on my Savage 93r17 BTVS. It's the same rifle as the one you're getting, only with a laminate thumbhole stock, and with that scope, it's a real tackdriver.

    top 10 greatest cartridges ever

I feel like he should have included 7.92 Kurz, the round used in the STG-44. The STG-44 was the first Assault Rifle, and as far as I know, the 7.92 Kurz was one of the first intermediate cartridges used in a military weapon. You could also make a case for 5.56 NATO, for a similar reason.

Have you ever received a firearm as a gift?

Yes, when I was 14, My grandfather gave me a Savage .17 HMR rifle (http://www.savagearms.com/93r17BTVS.htm), with a scope. He holds on to it for me, as we unfortunately live very far away New Hampshire and New Mexico, but hopefully that will soon change. It's a beautiful gun, and a real...

Moving into new house - suggestions?

I agree with the thorny bushes. If you can find them, plant Rosa Rugosa, or Japanese Roses. They're incredibly tenacious, thorny and hard to get rid of. It's essentially nature's own barbed wire, and it looks pretty too, I guess. You don't need to care for it at all.

What is the least useful self-defense advice you have ever heard?

I've never heard this as self-defense advice, just as "keep your kids from playing with your guns and getting hurt" advice. If you have kids, I would imagine that this is a very good idea It would be better self-defense advice if it was "keep all but one or two guns unloaded and locked away...

Questions about guns for a book

I realize the .22LR isn't the best SHTF gun out there, but that is what the main character will have. The low power and range of the rifle will serve to heighten tension, and the main character will upgrade to a more powerful weapon as soon as he can. As for Marlin 39A vs Marlin 981T, the 981T...

Got Boarded by the U.S. Coast Guard...

I don't really know anything about subs or the coast guard, but with all due respect, I think that you crossed the line SSN Vet. Obviously serving in a submarine is dangerous, but so too is sailing through hurricanes to rescue people, or piloting landing craft on D-day and in other amphibious...

Questions about guns for a book

Alright, thanks for the horse info. And I think I'm going to have the character use a Marlin 981T (at least at first), it seems accurate from what I've heard around here. Thank you to everyone who responded.

Questions about guns for a book

Sorry for not mentioning the situation, and thanks for the answers so far. It isn't an urban zombie situation, it's more of a wilderness trek. A combo of food-gathering and a little self-defense. I am planning on giving the character(s) something with more oomph later on. Also, If you had to...

Questions about guns for a book

I am going to try and write a novel next month (http://www.nanowrimo.org/), and there are a few gun-related questions that I figured folks around here would be able to help me with. Which would be a better SHTF/survival gun, a .22LR bolt action, or a .22LR semiauto? I realize that .22LR isn't...

    Favorite books

I enjoyed World War Z as well, but you don't really need to read the zombie Survival guide first. I didn't, and I sure enjoyed that book. I also read Monster Hunters International, written by The High Road's Larry Correia. If you like fantasy at all, try anything by Terry Pratchett. Anything by...

Carry a knife, save a life.

This brings to mind an incredibly sad story I read in the Boston Globe a while back. A woman was choked to death when her scarf got caught in an escalator. Two people tried to help, a father and his son, IIRC. One stayed with her, and the other tried to get a pair of scissors or anything to cut...
