    1k for a shotgun?

Yes, of course I realize that. I was trying to address the OP when it comes to tactical/combat shotguns, not shotguns hyper-specialized for trap/skeet, (which of course have their own rather major limitations). I gave the OP a couple examples of higher-end S-12s that cost >$1k. However, a...

    1k for a shotgun?

Competition Saiga-12's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FziECY1mSaY My Saiga-12; recently customized by Lone Star Arms: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciQU37GG6-Q A gun like mine costs ~$1650. Imo, it's well worth that and a hell of a lot more capable firearm than the similarly priced...

light load in a auto 12?

+1 to Federal "value pack" 100-round boxes of birdshot, (3 dram 1 1/8 oz load, 7 1/2 shot). This is the lightest stuff that will reliably cycle in my Saiga-12. It works fine.. but the el cheapo Winchester does not.

    Question about Saiga 12 magazines

I find 8-round mags to be the ideal combination of reasonable length and decent shell capacity. Izhmash, (OEM), 8-round mags are the best available, but they're extremely scarce in the States, (thank you BATFE), so when some do surface for sale, the usual asking price is ~$120-$150 apiece...

    Saiga 12 project

Yep, that's a CAA UPG-47 grip. I like it pretty well, but will most likely replace it with one of Mike Davidson's grips when he releases em, (beginning of next year). The stock is an ACE Ultra-lite modular, and I love it. Less is more with this design. I like the Tromix bolt-on charging...

    Saiga 12 project

You're right, the vented Polychoke II is pretty long. Since taking those pics, I've sold it, and have a shorter, non-vented Polychoke on the way.

I'm glad to hear you're liking your restored S-12, Girodin. I love mine... she's by far my favorite firearm to take plinking. Here's a couple pics of my S-12.

    Winchester 1300 Defender

I like the chrome plated barrels on the Win Super X guns.. but their magazines only hold 5 shells.

which dvds would you recommend for OVERALL shotgun technique esp. defensive measures?

So it seems to me that ideally you'd train with, (or watch the videos of), both Gabe Suarez, (on how to best use a more ideal combat shotgun, the S-12), and Clint Smith, (so you could more effectively use whatever's available).

    Winchester 1300 Defender

Personally I think the reason that most people don't like pistol grips on pump-guns is that they weren't really designed for it, so it doesn't feel that "natural". Imo, if you want a shotgun with a pistol grip, get a Saiga-12 and convert restore it, (from the "sporter" config the damnable...

    Looking at getting a shotgun.

The shortest S-12 you'll find, (from the OEM anyway), is a IZ-109 with a 19" barrel. Custom S-12's with 8", 10", or 12" barrels do exist, but you'd need a sbs tax stamp and a fair amount of patience to get one, (the companies that convert a standard S-12 to that have a waiting list of several...

Best way to regularly unload shotgun

Afaik, springs do not fatigue by simply remaining compressed. What wears em out is repeated compression and expansion. It shouldn't harm anything to simply leave your gun's mag loaded. Of course, to unload my favored scatter-gun, (S-12), I simply remove the magazine from the receiver. ;)

    Winchester 1300 Defender

Well, most people consider the location/design of the safety on the Win 1300 to be superior to those on the Rem or Mossberg. It's more natural and quick to disengage. Also, the Win 1300 has an aluminum triggerguard, just like the Mossberg models, which I prefer to the Rem's polymer. The 1300...

    Looking at getting a shotgun.

Yes, it's more than long enough, and you can buy a Polychoke to use with it to further tighten your patterns. Some people hunt with 19" S-12's.

I think a 24" barrel is more than long enough for duck hunting. ymmv.

    Looking at getting a shotgun.

You can buy a Saiga-12 with a 22" or 24" barrel. The most popular 19" models are not the only ones out there. Yes, Surefire makes 2-round mags for Saiga-12's specifically for hunting.

What did I buy? Did I get taken?

~$1200 for an upgraded Rem pump-gun. :uhoh: For that much, they ought to at least chrome the barrel. Then again, I've paid ~$1k, (Arsenal SGL-20), for what could be a ~$450 rifle, ("sporter" Saiga 7.62x39), because I appreciate the many additional military features offered on the Arsenal...

    Saiga 12 project

Girodin, I think you'll get a lot more constructive criticism, (from people who actually know what the hell they're talking about), over at forum.saiga-12.com There are dozens if not hundreds of members there who have extensive experience with Chaos railed handguards.
