    THR Remington 1858 Club

I haven't been on here much the past 8 years, but I thought I'd post a picture of my 1973 Lyman Navy import, made by Armi San Paolo (ASP). The steel is quite hard. It is harder than the steel on current imports. The bolt has put a line on the cylinder, yes, but on the 21st Century Ubertis I...

    Antiqued Guns

Guns kept indoors most likely retained a new-ish appearance. But as for guns carried in holsters or saddle scabbards ... I suspect that duststorms, rain, friction, black powder residue trapped between gun and (occasionally-)wet leather, etc. took their toll in a few short years. I do doubt that...

    Antiqued Guns

I have been working on antiquing an Uberti revolving Navy "pistol" this month. The project is going to run into next month 'cause I am heading to Dixon's Muzzleloading Fair this weekend. :)

Grease the wedge on a Colt?

Howdy. How do y'all prefer to lubricate the Colt wedge, the arbor slot, and the barrel slots? Do you prefer oil, bore butter, rifle grease? I am trying to reduce wear to the wedge and to the slots, but I don't want a black, gooey mess in there after I shoot the gun with real BP. I have never...

    The THR 1851/1860 Club

This one's been through an Indian War or two. She's getting a conversion cylinder later this summer. She's still tight, for an old bird. (Uberti)

    Taylor's 1851/1861 Navy Conversion Cylinder

Thanks. That looks like a smokeless load. I would prefer BP (to keep the pressures very low in this softer-steel gun - I don't want to chew up the wedge prematurely and/or blow the barrel off the gun. :) ).

    Taylor's 1851/1861 Navy Conversion Cylinder

Hello. Does Black Hills or another company produce a .38 BP cartridge whose bullet will expand to .375? I understand that accuracy will suffer if the bullet doesn't fully engage the rifling. Thank you in advance. Outlaw

    Back from The Goon!

Nice looking gun. Did you refinish the grips?

    Best 1858 clone?

Did you replace the mainspring in that gun with a lighter one, for use with that conversion cylinder? Or did you simply loosen the spring tension screw? Or neither? I am worried about the hammer and/or the cylinder's firing pins being deformed from the hard impact that the stock spring will produce.

    Best 1858 clone?

I always liked that antiqued Uberti that you had, Crawdad1.

    Best 1858 clone?

The Spanish-made Santa Barbara Remington was the best of the lot back in the day. But, alas, they are no longer made. The old Lyman Ubertis from the early 1970's were arguably the best Remingtons that Uberti ever produced. (Lyman also imported Remingtons from Armi San Paolo.) The current Uberti...

C&B Colt vs Remington article is finished

The Colts are prettier, but there's a reason that "wedge guns" were made obsolete by top-strap guns.

Which Cap & Ball revolver is better

Sheesh, Mike. You shut down this poll awfully quick. :/ If the 1860 was better, then why did top-strap guns make "wedge guns" obsolete?

Best Way to Remove Scratches from Stainless Remington?

This gun isn't a shooter, it's a wall hanger. :) The steel was polished at the factory. So, I'll have to finish up with some type of metal polish, and I can't use anything too abrasive to remove the scratches 'cause I'll need to blend in the "fixed" areas afterwards.

Best Way to Remove Scratches from Stainless Remington?

Howdy. I picked up a stainless Pietta 1858 that has a couple of scratches on the frame. I am thinking of trying some 600 grit sandpaper dipped in oil, followed by 1500 grit and then some Mother's Mag Metal Polish. Is this a reasonable approach?

Man oh man... 1851 London Navy

Uberti switched to Pietta's case-coloring method, sometime in 2012. It looks better but isn't very durable.

    I'm in a black & white mood. Uberti .44 with custom grips converted to .45 S&W Schofield (I don't shoot .45 Colt :D).
