    Civil War Weapons question

Pistols were mainly issued to officers and cavalry. Actually, early in the war, for cavalry, the sword was considered the primary weapon, and the revolver was the backup or secondary. In many cases, one or two extra revolvers were available in pummel holsters over the front of the saddle...

    Flint lock pistol

Estimating the value of an antique gun is almost impossible to do without seeing good pictures of the gun. If you look at Flayderman's Guide, there are hundreds of flintlock pistols of many different nationalities, makes, models, and variations. And of course, the value also depends on the...

    Civil War Ghosts

There's definitely something haunting about walking around Civil War battlefields, as I've done a few times, when you think about the fact that you are walking on the same ground that thousands of soldiers walked on, fought on, and died on. I often get a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye...

    History of Colt reproductions

Great article. Thanks. Adler also has a book, "Colt Blackpowder Reproductions and Relicas", published in 1998. It's a great book but is a little hard to find now, and can be expensive.

    Single action army clones

USFA makes nice guns but watch out for quality problems lately. Also they make changes to guns that are not noted and updated on their web site. For example, go look at the pictures of the Custer Battlefield model and notice the rustic metal finish -- except they've changed production to a...

    cowboy ammo

Generally, there won't be enough information on the box to determine if the ammo is safe to use in your gun -- except for the "Cowboy Action Load" designation.

    cowboy ammo

Cowboy ammo will very specifically say "Cowboy Load" on the box. It's a lighter load than the load you bought.

    Piette/Uberti/Taylors???

Your choice of manufacturers are Uberti and Pietta. These days, they seem to be about equal in quality. Some distributors such as Taylors and Cimmarron often special order custom versions and/or customize with different finishes, markings, or options -- at higher prices of course.

    U.S. M1842 Martial Pistol - H. Aston

Hi Folks: I'm proud to have found a nice U.S. M1842 pistol at the Marietta (Georgia)Military Antiques show last weekend. I attend the show often but usually don't find anything interesting. However, I have been looking for a good M1842 for about a year but most of the ones I've seen online...

    won a auction now what?

Read the instructions that come with the converter, but if it's like my R&D, it's designed to take Cowboy loads just fine. Here's the warning statement that came my my cylinder, "Use of ammunition other than factory loaded 'Cowboy Ammunition' by reputable manufacturers, or black powder, black...

Welcome to the forum. I'll add my vote for the 1858 Remington. Mine's a Uberti but I understand that Pietta is about as good and maybe a little cheaper.

    Other Springfield Trapdoor Owners Here?

Sounds like a Pedersoli or Uberti replica from Italy. There are very good quality and are good shooters but they are not antique Springfields.

    Other Springfield Trapdoor Owners Here?

I recently got interested in Springfield .45-70 trapdoors and bought a restored Model 1873 in great condition off a gun auction site. It looks almost new. Now I am looking for a nice carbine version of the same gun. I'm going to pick up some BP ammo for it and do a little shooting at the...

    Just Got This Trapdoor!

Congratulations on a fine looking trapdoor. The reconstuction job looks amazing. I recently bought my first 1873 trapdoor. It, too, was a well-done restoration. Many serious collectors look down on restorations and don't touch them, but I feel that it's still the same gun underneath and a...

    MidwayUSA Shipping=Idiots

I've ordered a number of times from Midway and have been amazed at the speed of their shipping. I did notice on my last order that they used the plastic envelope. This the first time they've done it and the contents were not damaged, but I was a little surprised at the new way of packaging. No...
