I started out using a 12ga Wingmaster. It had a no-vent-rib 28" barrel on it. I did ok with it. Bought a 30" fixed full vent rib for it and it helped a lot. I say, build what you have.

I was shooting a Wingmaster with a 30" fixed full choke. I averaged anywhere between17-21. Ended up getting a Tikka 412s in a trade and my first time out with it, I shot a 25. Haven't shot bellow a 20 since getting it.
A proper fitting gun can certainly make a difference.
I'm sure you ingested a small amount of lead. Certainly not enough to cause lasting effects.
