What exposes you to more lead?

This has no supporting data, but here is what I’m careful with: I use an lnl progressive with the primer line going directly into a sealed plastic bottle, so no primer residue to dump/ clean out and minimal primer dust…I think. I vibratory clean before loading, and separate the cases from...

    Good .44 magnum revolver?

For hiking a SW 69 would be ideal in my book. 5 shot L frame, bianchi thumb break holster, carries like a dream. Great trigger, good sights, I have the hogue tamer grips and recommend that swap as the gun is a bit snappy with the short barrel and light weight. You can run, jump without parts...

Can a .32-40 1894 be bored out to .38-55 and still function?

Maybe check the tip of the lever, crud in the link pin area pushing it into the firing pin, is the lever tip straight? May not be the original fitted parts? Pretty common on these old guns, firing pin and lever tip may bind for some reason? Maybe something slightly tweaked on the link/lever?

Can a .32-40 1894 be bored out to .38-55 and still function?

@1K, they float freely in the bolt, below flush at rearmost travel. Depending if the action is up or down it can be either below flush or proud of the bolt face. The case rim moves the pin back into the bolt when it slides up during chambering as the pin is rather rounded and does not catch...

How can I resize the brass before using an expanding mandrel?

If I understand correctly, this involves using a Redding FL die with the decap/expander removed? Unless the necks have been turned to a thinner profile the FL sizer should leave a small enough ID that the mandrel will be setting the ID. Barring some unusually tight neck requirements the idea...

    Electronic hearing protection

I like the Howard Leight impact sports for field use. They are not what I use at the range as they are only 22dB. They don’t get in the way of cheek weld too badly. Batteries last forever and they help my bad hearing. They do amplify leaf crunch etc. I think I sound like a Trex going through...

So, what can i load with my .309s?

Pretend cast bullets dont have a ballistic coefficient. As long as they feed and you keep the velocity reasonable they should work anywhere a similar weight jacketed will work with the exception of semi autos as they likely won’t cycle.

    H4350 for .308?

308 will “go bang” reasonably well, but not always optimally, with a wide range of combinations. I have old (1970) DuPont data for a 180 .428 seat 4350 at 51.0 compressed 2625 fps 24 inch 51000 psi. Myself I would not use this in some semi autos as the pressure curve might be a bit long. 150...

What is "it" that a barrel likes???

Distance to lands changes with different bullets, seater stem to bullet tip fit can affect concentricity, seating depth can affect powder combustion (I’ve found this true on the lower end of the loading range, not so much as pressure rises). Light bullets recoil less before they leave the...

    Fired/washed 45 Colt brass corroded?

Range brass often shows a degree of corrosion in addition to being full of dirt/sand. Should clean up after being washed with a strong stream to clean out the insides then dried and tumbled for a couple hours. Also sometimes contains discarded reload cases, I toss those.

How often do you USE the handgun you carry in the woods?

SW M-69 for deer hunting and general woods walks where targets are under 50 yards. SW500 6 1/2” with 300FTX at 1500 for up to 75 when I’m in practice, otherwise it’s 50Y also. Both have delta points, and I wear ear protection as even a slight chance of making bad tinnitus even worse is not...

Reloading questions from an AR newbie

75,77 non-VLD bullets will seat correctly at mag length. Must be single loaded if seated out near the lands. The VLD styles will need single loading as the ogive is inside of the case when seated to mag length.

    .35 Remington handloads are keyholing

If it’s winter, shoot into a plowed / stomped on and compacted snow bank and dig the bullets out and examine them. They likely won’t go more than 4 feet. See if they are engraved and if they show signs of stripping in the bore. Then there is the last resort factory ammo test…

    S&W 500

The Lee collet crimps are great. I had to lathe down the end of one to clear the ledge on the lnl shell plate. A reduced effort method is to back a sizer waaay off, put the deprime waaay down, and size just the top 3/4 inch of the case, where the press has lots of leverage. Then use a second...

    Cleaning flash holes.

Long line ammo I do all sorts of things which I think COULD make a difference and the primer inside deburr/hole uniformer is one of the things. Honestly I have no data to prove/disprove efficacy but do it anyhow.

    Shoulder dents from excess lube?

I agree with your diagnosis. The plastic baggie lube method, with spray or favorite solvent and lube, is the best combination of speed and even application for me thus far and should help prevent what you are showing. Weatherby double radius shoulders are very susceptible to that and the...

    125 gr cast for deer

Unless one is a Truly excellent shot (unlike 99% of handgun owners I see at the range), head shots with handguns are not really a great idea, quite likley to blow off a jaw, nose, ear, etc as the head is a small quick moving target. 125 cast here in the North I would choose a different gun if...

Reloading the .375 H&H Magnum; first attempt with salvaged components.

300 gr sierras shoot well with 4350 in my gun. Varget and 4895 also shoot well as a somewhat reduced load but I find the groups don’t tighten up until the pressure is high enough to clean up the burn, somewhere midway between suggested starting and book max. Tolerable but a 375 is not really a...

Lee Carbide Factory Crimp Dies and Redding Profile Crimp Dies

Having numerous examples of both:the reddings are nicely finished on the inside and out and hold settings well. A redding body die followed by a Lee collett neck size requires no inside neck lube and doesn’t stretch the case. I finish handgun cases with the Lee collett crimp die, totally...
