    New 10/22 Sporter

Thanks for the update. There is nothing magic about the Vipers, except that I have had fewer feed issues in the Mark I - IV Rugers with the truncated cone than with round noses. But they always seemed to be loaded a bit hotter than the bulk box. I suspect the same with the Federal (but I have...

    New 10/22 Sporter

Failure to feed and some misfires sounds like it wants more range time. Maybe a box of Remington Vipers and a good chamber scrub? (I usually use them for my first box through a semiauto 22 to loosen things up a bit, but that's just me.)

    New 10/22 Sporter

Were the failures failures to feed, failure to extract, failure to fire, or something else? My usual failure with Winchester bulk is misfires.

Lever action rifle - fast action, western in appearance, suitable for deer hunting, in a more ubiquitous caliber, and of a quality build. Which one?

I have both a Model 94 and a Model 336. Of the two, I prefer the Marlin in 30-30. Ammo use the Hornady Leverevolution.

454 the most versatile 45 caliber

I have a 20" 460 S&W barrel for my Encore. And, the recoil is pretty stiff with my middlin' handloads. But, it will also take 45 C and 454 C cartridges...

.357 Magnum carbine that is not a lever action?

You can assemble a new TC/SSK Contendender for ~$1100 from EABCO.net. It should be accurate. With a 24" barrel it is still carbine length since the action is so short.

Why No Integrally Suppressed 300 Blackout Bullpups?

The inherent assumption is that ATF will cooperate with the "integral design and suppressor tax stamp" thingy. I think it would likely be pushed to an agency only product line that would limit what is already a small market. That would greatly increase the price demanded since the small market...

    Rossi Rifle Decision

Purely based on aesthetics, I actually like the bolt better than the synthetically stocked lever. But I have a Model 39TDS, so that introduces a bias. I also prefer a clip over a tube for a working 22. I always want to keep working the action on a tube until the magazine is dry, particularly...

    One rifle only.

I have tried to answer this question a number of times, always falling a bit short. That is why my gun safes are full.

PCC: IRL Trajectory and Ballistic Calculator Do Not Match . . . Why?

With deference to LoonWolf's initial observation, it could be that the model is a bit off. When it is model vs observation, observation always wins. Also see http://www.columbia.edu/~to166/hiawatha.html

    Am I being realistic?

Internet video? Nothing like a wide angle lens to make a close target look far, far away.

Do I need this caliber if they are this close together?

This is a realm where need is a very personal concept. On paper there doesn't seem to be enough difference to worry about, especially since the translation from paper performance to field performance will get down to exactly how the specific 6mm BRA is put together. If you have a BR with a...

Do you camouflage your rifle to match your environment?

Not unless I expect the deer to be shooting back. I have never found that, for deer hunting, camo has ever made any difference. On our place, the deer just don't care. I have found on circumstance in which camo provides an advantage, however. It tends to hide the blood stains that you pick...

44-40 vs 357 mag for lever gun

44 Magnum. Load it to 44-40 pressure and velocity levels. The brass will be a lot easier to find and last longer. Plus, you can go full bore if you feel the need.

    Hunting Rifle Refinement

I was able to hunt this season for the first time since 2019 (long story involving serious injury and rehab). During that hiatus, I had a lot of time to think about a lot of things (one was the conversion of my old TC Contender to a rifle). However, I managed to overlook a bit of field craft...

    Only have 4 rifles

It is always nice to see someone that has the moral courage and strength of will to confine his wants to his needs. If I was able to do this, I would still be hunting with my Rem 788 in 6 mm and Rem 583 22 LR. I haven't fired either in some years at this point. But, as time goes on, if you...

One Rifle, Most Convenient Zero for Multiple Handloads?

    1. I have not often found that, all other things being equal, two different bullets (e.g. Nosler and Hornady .308 165 gr) will shoot to the same point of impact. I have one rifle ( a T/C Icon 243) that is an exception. 2. I tend to mistrust the zero of any rifle (other than a 22 rimfire) made...

Has anyone bought an SKS... Lately

I got my Chines SKS in the mid-80s before NORINCO flooded the market. It is made better than the NORINCO guns. As I recall, one of the motivations for the design of the AKs is that the SKSs were too expensive to produce because they required a lot more machining (this was before computers...

    Who doesn’t own/like AR’s?

I own one, but I don't particularly like it. It is a Remington R15 VTR with a collapsible stock. It is reasonable accurate--I recall holding 4" groups off hand at 100 yards and sup MOA from the bench. It also has a nice trigger. But, the way the action works makes the felt recoil a lot...
