I got steel-cased new stuff from Russia (1,000) for $230 shipped at cheaper-than-dirt a few weeks ago.

    Gun range on a barge

One thing you would have to deal with a lot is wind. To me, an ideal range has lots of trees and berms around to shelter the shooters from the wind.

Best quality AR-15 for the money

I agree. The "LE" version by Spike's Tactical is the same as the $950 ST-15 but without the "cold-hammer forged" barrel. I've got one in the closet and I love it. Here is a pic of mine with a custom receiver:

What is the last gun that you bought?

XD 45 "service" model. BEST GUN I HAVE EVER OWNED! I actually took it to the 50 yd. range and landed 11 out of 13 rounds on a sheet of paper. It was the funnest trip to the range I've ever had. I put about 120 rounds through that gun. I even fired off the defensive ammo I had with me.

ideas to make home safer in seedy neighborhood?

I agree with Sano. I have a yellow lab and great dane and they will bark so loud and run so fast at anyone coming through the front door unannounced that my .45 will probably not even be necessary.
