I put a Leupold IER 2.5x on a Marlin 1895 using an XS rail and to be frank, it was just an awkward setup. No doubt this would be effective for many people, but I'll just go with a peep sight or a standard scope mount next time. JMHO, YMMV, etc.
A 4" .357 Magnum double-action revolver would be the ticket for me. If I didn't hunt I'd choose a CZ75 variant, G17/19, or some other good 9mm service pistol.
If I had to choose one long gun as my only firearm it would be a 14.5" AR15, but if I can add a long gun to the aforementioned handgun...
H4350: .30-06, .270
H4895: .308, developing .223 and .30TC loads
748: .30-30
IMR 8208 XBR: Got for .223, going to try out some other things :D
Clays, Trail Boss: .38 Special and .357 Magnum (158 LSWCs for both)
Wow, that guy sounds like he knows his stuff. I never knew about these extreme "calibrations". Funny, because my handloads are better than the factory rounds I've bought. More consistent crimp, C.O.L., etc. Good results on the range, too!
My 760 '06 has respectable recoil, more than my dad's BAR in '06, but is not as punishing as my Grandfather's Winchester Model 54 in the same chambering!
I think that besides weight, a big factor is the stock design. The stock and metal buttplate on the 760 really isn't that forgiving...
Two years ago, my buddy and I learned how to reload with his father. Started out loading .30-30 with Speer 170 FP's.
Last night, I gave my father a reloading walkthrough as we reloaded sixty rounds of .308 Winchester start to finish. :)
