    Paper cartridges and BPCR

Thanks, guys. I wasn't sure whether the percussion sharps even qualified as a "cartridge" gun. Are the NRA committee rulings available anywhere? thanks, GB

    Paper cartridges and BPCR

Stupid question, but are the paper cartridge sharps rifles legal for BPCR (or BPCR silhouette) competition? I read the rules but it seemed the Powers That Be could fall either way on paper cartridges, and my google-fu failed me in finding any committee rulings on this (or any) subject...

    Choosing a single-shot .410

Any thoughts on Yildiz vs. H&R vs. whatever other options are out there? The little folding Yildiz is really appealing right now, but I haven't had a chance to actually handle one (Academy's inventory system is really terrible). -GB

    Hunting and Hearing Protection

Although I didn't even fire 1 shot in the 3 hours I was out, my hope is that I'll be firing multiple shots on future hunts (both squirrel and rabbit limit at 8 'round these parts). My eventual plan is to use a muzzleloader, but for now I've got an old single-shot 12ga with blackpowder (actually...

    Hunting and Hearing Protection

Do you guys wear hearing protection when you hunt? If so, what do you wear? I went hunting for the first time last weekend (small game at the local WMA), and I carried my muffs with me but didn't end up wearing them much. I wanted to be able to hear, yet I'd also like to maintain my hearing...

    Hunting With Classic Firearms

My goal for this year has been to take up small game hunting with such a gun. I have a circa 1908 12ga single shot (marked simply with "Champion") that belonged to my great grandfather, and an old 1940s stevens .22/.410 that belonged to my grandfather. I am working on the .22/.410 right now...

    Cheek weld?

Thanks, guys. I'll try to get a picture but I've come to the conclusion that the bulk of the problem is my stance/hold, and I'll try to work on that. I have no plans to use this gun for wing-shooting, just squirrels and bunnies. Eventually I want to get a muzzle-loader, but in the meanwhile...

    Stevens .22/.410 light strike?

Hello everyone! I recently pulled my grandfather's Stevens .22/.410 out of the closet (it's been sitting in one closet or another for the past 25 years or so) and took it to the range to sight it in. I've been trying to take up small game hunting this year and finally made some time to get to...

    Stock Repair

Hello All! I was taking apart my Stevens .22/.410 to clean out the innards (it's misfiring the .22) and somehow while removing the bolt that holds the stock on I managed to knock a chunk out of the side. It's about 1/4" x 2", and a single "splinter" of wood came off. There's a hole in the...

    Cheek weld?

Thanks everyone for the advice and comments. I believe you are right that my stance and hold are off. While bench shooting at the range today (more on that later) I found that I could get my cheek in the stock right handed, but not so well left handed. When playing around with the stock just...

    Cheek weld?

Thanks, witchhunter. Oh, i forgot to mention that I'm using the stock iron sights, not sure how much lower I could get them. -GB

    Cheek weld?

Greetings! I've always heard that you should have a "cheek weld" when shooting a shotgun, and assumed the same is likely true of a rifle. I have an old savage .22/.410 (used to be my grandfather's) that I'm planning to take to the range tomorrow to sight it in and see if I can get...

Laundry list of what's needed to be shooting the Pietta 1858 army

That and a .45acp shell glued to the end of a posicle stick (for use as a measure) is precisely what I went to the range with my first time :). Also used a cleaning rod, patches and a squirt bottle of moose milk when i got done though. -GB

    Cap Fit

If only I could find remington 10's locally... I got the Winchester 11 magnums's (all they had at Gander Mountain) and they practically fall off the nipples of my new Pietta "1858" if I don't pinch them. -GB

    Shiny New Remington

I'll dig up links later, but the conicals in question were designed for the Ruger Old Army. They have a large lube groove to remove the need for a lubed wad. Whyte Leather Works casts and sells a variety of such bullets. I'll dig up links to both the caster and the mold vender when I'm at an...

    Shiny New Remington

Thanks, guys. I wiped it down with a t-shirt to where it wouldn't drip when I showed it off. Here's a terrible pic to prove it exists ;) I've got 250 pre-lubed Big-Lube conicals ordered, and I found a local source for 3F Goex (at $23 a pound, though, I'm thinking I might need to find...

    Shiny New Remington

Pictures soon! First though a question -- when I put the hammer at half-cock, I can rotate the cylinder in one direction. When it "clicks" into place, the cylinder under the rammer aaalmost lines up, but it's gone just a wee tiny bit too far for the plunger to go in the cylinder. Is it...

    Shiny New Remington

The suspense was getting to her, so my wife made me open my christmas present on christmas eve! (we do have a tradition of opening one present on christmas eve) To my (feigned) surprise, I found a shiny new Remington "1858" New Model Army revolver from Cabela's! I took it out to play with...

    Colt 1851, .36 vs .44 handling

Thanks guys :). I was worried that if I liked the '51 best (I tried a .44 1851 Colt and a .44 Remington New Army), I would find that the .36 Colt handled different than the .44 (since I wasn't interested in the .44 1851, only the .36). Turned out I was more accurate with the Remington, and it...

    Colt 1851, .36 vs .44 handling

Well, I tried both and I think I prefer the Remington. There were some things I like better about the colt, and I'm sure I'd be happy wih either, but for my first revolver I'm gonna go with the remington. The range master commented "I like that black powder gun... It sounds like a cannon!" :)...
