    .270 Caliber. Why?

.270 / 7mm When the .270 came out there was a bad taste in north AM over the metric system. So they did the next best thing, they made a 7 mm. .270 > 7 mm. 7 mm (as in 7x57) > .284 TGR

.308 faceoff: Sierra Game King 150 vs. Hornady SST 150

Like so many things in our sport bullet mfg. preference seems to be an rifle specific. I ran much the same tests and my 30-06 (Win 70) did much better with the Hornady. I was so impressed I bought some Hornady 130 gr. for my 270 (Win fwt) I still have most of them. The group size almost doubled...

    Rifle number two.

To me the .243 is just a touch on the light side,an excellent cartridge in the hands of a very good rifleman. You might do well to look at the 25-06 which is a bit more powerful and a bit more versatile. TGR

    Favorite rifle/caliber for deer

If the weather is nice first choice is my Win.FWT.in .270 W. If the weather is crappy comes the Tikka 695 stainless/plastic. TGR

Dangers in shooting 38s out of a 357??

My Python is 45 years old,and has shot many thousands of .38s. Because it gets cleaned regular I still can not detect a chamber ring where the .38 cases end.I don't expect I will shoot another 45 years worth of .38s but the old Colt would. TGR

    What's YOUR most prized handgun?

Many years ago (1967) we were the poster children for "poor" my lovely wife scrimped and saved and bought me a new Colt Python. This is and will always be my most prized handgun. TGR

    Caliber choice above .308?

I am a really big fan of the .375 H&H,if I were to only have one rifle it would be my Mod.70 .375 H&H. Having said that it is not perfect, the rifles chambered for the round tend to get a bit heavy after a day roaming through the hills. In addition to this weight thing the only way to fully...

What rifle caliber, bullet for the least meat loss & damage

It has been my experience that the smaller fast cartridges are inclined to do a great deal of damage if the shot is a bit off.( I know this never happens to us great shots) The .270 to 30-06 group are bad in this case but the toy mags .264, 7mm and .300s are real messy if things don't go...

    Favorite powder/charge for 150-165gr 30-06

I am a big fan off IMR 4350 in the 30-06. My long time standard has been a 150 gr, either Sierra or lately Hornady SSTahead of a compressed load of IMR 4350. The load is no longer listed by Lyman but at one time it was one of their "accuracy" loads. TGR

    .375 H&H Magnum

My .375 H&H Win.Mod.70 Super Express was bought 25+ years ago and has has been a flawless performer. This is arguably one of the best all around cartridges available. The performance with factory ammunition is outstanding, and if you reload it is just twice as good. Like most people that own one...

Need a powder recommendation for my 264 win mag and a 300 weatherby

I have not reloaded for the .300 Wby. I have reloaded many rounds for the 264 WM Over the years I have settled on one standard. This is a 120 gr Sierra ahead of 60 gr of IMR 4350 normally I use CCI mag primers. This is a very accurate load that chronos at 3200 fps. TGR

Lost loading data for my 375 H&H

My very old Lyman manual shows a starting load of 64 gr. of IMR 4064 and a max. of 71 gr. with a 270 gr.Bullet. I am working more with lighter bullet weights. 225 to 235 gr. Fun cartridge to work with. TGR

    9.3x62 vs. 375 H&H

I expect that the 9.3 is a good cartridge, I do not believe that it is as good a cartridge as the .375 H&H. With bullet weights available to the hand loader ranging from 200 to 300 grains and a trajectory ( depending on the load) about the same as a 30-06 the .375 H&H is a hard act to follow and...

Vote for 270 powder not sensitive to temperature

I have found that IMR 4350 is not particularly temperature sensitive. I use it in some loads for 5 different calibers. It has performed very well in my Win.FWT with a 22 in.bbl. I also am lucky enough to live in Manitoba. TGR

    1911 kabooom

I have been fortunate, in 40 years of shooting 1911s I have not had an occurrence like the OP. Having said this I have been involved in the search for the cause of one. In that case we determined that the pistol did fire out of battery.( Before some of you tell me a 1911 can not fire out of...
