    I need some advice

Go back tomorrow and look some more . . . having snow is a tremendous asset. I'd guess he hit it either far forward or very high (but below the spine) or very low & nicked a shoulder/shoulder blade.

Small pieces of meat found; no blood, no hair.

I'll not quit hunting, however I may quit talking to foolish people. To the Op: master your chosen hunting method/methods; acknowledge your ability & hunt accordingly . . . ability will grow with experience; hunt within your constraints at the time; learn all you can about your quarry, learn...

NJ: Buying handgun ammo online is now illegal?!

Wrote my legislators, but if WA enacts this, I'll just move back home to Montana earlier than planned. Seattle/Olympia/ Tacoma . . . San Francisco North.

    Hunting Clothing

Walk hit it pretty close. While I do own camo, I wear neutral colors that blend with the terrain, mostly. Obviously, where blaze orange is required, do wear that for your own safety. Learn to watch, move quietly, listen, and pay consideration to the wind. Practice shooting & tracking &...

. . . when one is consistent & proficient at such range. Sorry, but people being the intelligent & ethical creatures we are, as hunters we owe "just animals" everything in our power to ensure them a quick, clean demise. To do otherwise is wrong, period. There is a HUGE difference between...

    Should I do this?

Don't forget to RSVP . . . and arrive in a 4WD stretch truck limo. Question: Does red carpet scare game?

Small pieces of meat found; no blood, no hair.

It happens, but it shouldn't happen when a hunter is ill prepared to make a shot at a given range. Practice at a range at which your gun (and you) shoots consistent, acceptable groups. "Big Buck" doesn't justify a shot at a range beyond either your or the rounds effectiveness . . . get within...

How old were you when you first started shooting?

Had a Red Ryder at 4, a .22 at 8. First deer & elk at 10. Montana was a great place in which to grow up & my Father, God rest his soul, was the best, in addition to being a fine outdoorsman & willing teacher. Started my Kids the same way.

    Pencilbainya

I always thought it was Pennsyltucky (least that's what my ex's Grandpap, a Waynesboro resident called it). I wish we'd get some snow . . . hard for an old MT boy to feel in his element here in the desert.

    28 Gauge for Pheasant?

3 splendid roosters & 4 quail with my 28 this morning . . . birds held fairly tight, dog did exceptionally well (as always . . . at least one of us is consistent . . . should have been a few more quail). Covered a lot of ground, harvested a couple more birds than my partner with the 12, and the...

    Arrow penetration on game

Didn't piss me off at all. Unfortunately, be it bow, muzzle-loader, slug-gun, or conventional firearm, there is a percentage that can't shoot, don't practice, don't sight-in, have zero tracking skills & fewer ethics. I've always described these as "arrow-slingers/gun pointers/slob "hunters"...
