Here is another simple thing to check that doesn't seem to have been mentioned.......strip the bolt out of the carrier and drop the carrier in the upper ....then turn the upper so the carrier can fall out....if it doesn't .....you have a gas tube dragging in the key and it can cause the problems...

45 ACP is also available in a DI version...uses the same carrier and bolt as a 5.56.....

I'm running the AR45 upper on a standard lower with a magwell adaptor that slips in like a mag and is held in by the stock AR mag catch. The USC mag is a Promag (around $38) and pretty well made...it has steel feed lips....shown in the pic is a 15 round mag.....the adaptors uses a paddle release...

DI AR45 with an HK USC Magwell adaptor.....Magwell adaptor inserts like a magazine.....in any standard AR15 lower....and uses HK USC magazines available from Promag in 10 15 and 20 round capacities, and have last round bolt hold open capability.......Upper is gas operated just like a 5.56.

For a defensive AR......I'd go with a DI .45 ACP. no chance of out of battery discharge like the blowback guns, recoil is non existent, they run cleaner than the blowbacks and even if your foe has body armor...hammer center of mass with 4 or 5 230 grain FMJ's and you will definitely make him/her...
