    Smith Revolver Original Stock Question

I’ve got a 17-5 that I’m swapping stocks on—from a lighter pair of Smith target stocks in walnut to the same stocks in goncalo alves so that it will match another gun for my boys. When I do, I might part with the original stocks, but people often say to retain the original stocks. I’ve the...

    Old Smith Woes

I have done the jacked (or gas checked lead bullets) as a procedure several times with no ill effects. I have bore scoped them as well, so if there is a problem I've sure not noticed it. I, too am curiois as to others' experience on this.

    Old Smith Woes

Just wanted to share some 'old' or should I say very pre-lock woes I've experienced with a couple of Smith revolvers lately. I know the thinking is that perhaps Smith (and other companies, really) cheapen production costs, and often their products, as time goes on. However, a few recent...

    reloading for the 1903

I've a sporterized 1903, open sights. I shoot 178/180 grain BTHP Hornaday (from Graf's) and 55 grains of H4350, which happens to the charge the gun likes. It shoots better than I can (open sights), which is a 1'' group at 40 yards. The gun is fun--good luck!

Ruger GP-100 vs. Smith 586 and 686 both in .357 with 6 inch barrels.

FWIW-- my main range gun is a 6'' 686, with the lock. It is approaching 5000 rounds through it, and I've not had an ounce of trouble with the thing. Regarding lock-up and the 'quality': I can say this- I also own three other SW revolvers, ranging from 1962 through the late 80's (model 29...

    Wad cutters

I think he's mostly pointing out that many are quick to ask questions of forums and such without attempting to do some reading to verify for themselves. It can be quite dangerous/misleading in some circumstances, depending on the question asked. All of the DEWC's I've ever loaded have a...

    Price check: S&W 17-5

I just bought a 17-5 for $600. It had 40 rounds through it, box, everything, and it a true 99% gun. From spending a lot of time looking in gun shops and what not, I think I paid a fair price for the gun, and I'd personally try to get 600 for it if it were me. To me, also, the gun being in...

    454 Casull

Your whole situation has me as interested as you are in finding out. I load 454 myself, but never with H110. I'm curious to see what the lab techs have to say. I know this wasn't your question, but I've had a great deal of success with IMR 4227 as well, slightly less recoil, too. And as...

Yes he did--and would customize the hardness if you ordered a lot.

    BSL Bulletworks

I've purchased a few thousand cast bullets from Buddy at BSL Bulletworks, but I notice his website is not available. It's been about a year and a half or more since I've ordered from him, and I know he was moving at one point. So my question is--does anyone have any more info on this...

Help me pick out a revolver

My CCW is a Smith Model 36. I have the 3'', but the 1 7/8 might fit the bill for you--just another model you might look at. By the way, this would be a used gun, so I'm not sure if you have gun shops around you that have a good used (especially revolver) inventory or not, but I'd recommend...

    Imr 4227

I too have a thread out there on my experimentation with 4227 and lead 158 grain bullets. Bottom line for me, all things considered, is around 16 grains with a good crimp. Stout load, very little 'ash' left, and really good accuracy. Also, in my Smith 686, I've never had an issue with...

Simple question: S&W 460 5" X model vs XVR model differences?

Not to hijack, but I shoot a 460 Thompson Encore for hunting, and the 460 caliber is a really fun round to reload for. Not sure if this is up your alley, but a VERY wide range of recoil and capabilities are possible here.

    44 Mag recommendations

I have shot my uncle's Redhawk quite a bit. With the standard grips, for me, it is uncomfortable to shoot, as the positioning of my hand always gets rocked by the trigger guard when I shoot. It's almost like the recoil cants the gun butt down and away slightly, which accounts for the hand...

me like the bang, me like the clang

I can load full house hard cast 240 grain, Keith style for $0.23 a piece. This comes up to $11.50 per 50, and I saw a box at a store about two weeks ago for $60 after taxes. This seemed ungodly high, but I've never purchased factory 44 mag rounds before... And I can load 44 special, same...

    IMR 4227 in 357 Magnum

Ha--this brings up a completely different issue altogether. I can shake/blow any residue out--no problems. In this case, though, you might shoot for a while before any problem shows up. Let us know long-term if you choose to use 4227 a lot--even with my cleanest 4227 combos, I still have...

    Missouri Gun and Quail Club

Thanks, Gary!! I actually had a tour this past weekend and have decided to join. I lucked out on timing, as the interview/safety process is actually this Sunday. Hopefully after this, I'll be in! I did like the place a great deal. I mostly like the fact that it's not insanely packed...

    IMR 4227 in 357 Magnum

It's quite true. I shoot from a sandbag rest so I'm rock steady when testing new loads--4227 is a several shot single hole powder when you get the right load--not kidding (15-20 yds, but you see my point).
