    30-06 powders

My rifle 30-06 likes IMR4350 so that's what I use. Tried H414 and groups grew big time so I stuck with what works. That's just my rifle, yours will have its own favorite powder

    Questions on tumbling media. Help!

I've noticed if I tumble before I de-prime my some walnut media will stick inside of the case and neck and I need to swab it out with a Q-tip before re-sizing. If I de-cap before tumbling I dont have the problem at all. So I decap before tumbling. Just my .02

    Questions on tumbling media. Help!

I use the walnut fron harbor freight. Get the one marked "fine" not "coarse". I also use NUfinish in it. Start the tumbler, pour in a little nufinish in, and let run for 10-15 min before adding brass. I find that mine does clump a little and if I just break them up with my hand its fine. I...

    Recoil Pad

Thanks Al, It appears I might have to return this one. Unless I totally rehape my stock to be over 1" shorter (top to bottom) this pad wont work. Seems stupid for them to put on the package that it fits this exact rifle, only for the pad to be over 1" shorter than the end of the stock ... oh...

    Recoil Pad

Picked up the Remington Super Cell recoil pad for my 700 BDL. On the packaging it specifically says for Rem 700 ADL/BDL with wood stocks. Got it home, unscrewed the two screws in the butt end of the stock, open up the recoil pad, and its no where near close to the same size as the stock. Just...

    Wood Blanks for making stocks.

Great Post by DM, I have zero experience with making stocks but I'm guessing that what DM is referring to with the layout, is that you want the grain to run the full length of your stock blank. If the grain runs perpendicular or at an angle to the length of the stock you are creating a weak...

    Wood Blanks for making stocks.

Nice bowls tomcat. Those are called segmented bowls. It does take alot of planning and talent to make those come out right. Looks like your grandfather did awsome work. I do mostly furniture, dressers, beds, rocking chairs, tables etc.

    Wood Blanks for making stocks.

Kiln dried wood is no worse than air dried lumber. In fact many people will only use kiln dried lumber as a lower MC can be achieved and the process kills any bugs or eggs that may be present within the wood. I would not hesitate to kiln dry those for stocks, you just need to find someone with...

    Wood Blanks for making stocks.

If you have any old oil based paint laying around some people will use that to paint on the end grain, although probably not quite as effective as a designated product. I know wood turners who do bowls and what not will seal their entire blank in wax to keep it from splitting and cracking with...

    Wood Blanks for making stocks.

Good points Sam. You alot of guys will use a product like Anchor Seal that you "paint" on the end grand of the wood that will keep the end grain from drying out much faster than the core which will cause checking and cracking in the end of the board. If you air dry the piece, you can only...

    Wood Blanks for making stocks.

Correct Tomcat. Not sure about grizzly though. I have some of their large stationary tools but never heard if them selling wood. Kentucky produces some of the nicest black walnut you will find.... something about the soil there. Black walnut around here doesn't get that deep dark color like...

    Wood Blanks for making stocks.

Moisture meter, mine has 2 pins in the top that you stick into the wood and it will give you the moisture content. Picked mine up at lowes on sale for $20. If you have any buddies that do serious woodworking they may have one you could borrow. Just keep in mind that in a thicker piece the...

    Wood Blanks for making stocks.

Well my other hobby happens to be woodworking. I can garuntee that blank is not dry enough to work yet. Figure 1 year of drying per inch of thickness as a general rule. You could find someone with a kiln which will cut that time down significantly. For furniture grade lumber (which I would...

    Opinions please: Retire this brass?

Not trying to hijack the thread but falls into the same catagory. Recently purchased some bulk pre-used brass. Trying to determine what is acceptable and what is scrap. I've attached a couple of pictures. The three pieces of brass on the left are ones I threw into the scrap box. They...

    Separating fired cases

Great info guys. Seems there are a couple different camps on this. Shooting out of a bolt rifle. Going through the lot of pr-fired brass I bought and found many different head stamps. Through looking up some of the ones I didn't know I found that the head stamp. "F C" is not only for...

    tumbling NU-FINISH & primers

The other thought I had on this is when tumbling in dry media, the primer pocket does not get cleaned, leading me to believe that the walnut is not contacting the primer pocket enough to clean, and therefore transfer anything to the area.

    Separating fired cases

How important is it to really keep cases separated by number of times fired (or reloaded)? I've read about people who have had cases give away after the first firing, and others who say they have reloaded some cases 20+ times. If I am inspecting the cases for signs of wear 2 or 3 times during...
