    Marlin 1894 in .45 Colt

It's so good to see that I'm not the only one in the world to find the round barrel .45 Colt version of the 1894. I bought mine in early 2012, on sale for $50 off, not quite as good a deal as tazbigdog (didn't feel like getting a credit card), but I still paid $550 before taxes, not a bad deal...

avoiding ear damage with powerful rifles

Greenmountain, we always wore plugs or muffs when doing normal firing with all small arms when I was in the Navy. With the big gun (5"/54 caliber), anyone riding in the gun house or in the control room directly below the gun house wore it. However, the gun captain, OMC (One Man Control/Safety...

Marlin 1894 .45 Colt: How hot can it handle?

Bzzt! Capt Quahog, you have the model number of that .45-70 wrong. It's the 1895, which has some fairly important differences from the 1894, mainly a much longer lever throw necessitated by the rifle length cartridges in which it's chambered, and the bolt is round instead of square. I can...

Marlin 1894 .45 Colt: How hot can it handle?

In reply to Paladin7's questions about why anyone would want to boost velocities using the extra power loads in the "Ruger/TC" section of the handloading manual: 1) Because you only own modern guns capable of handling these enhanced loads, with no danger of accidentally firing them in the...

    10mm Power?

ku4hx, I suspect the stuff about it being unsafe to fire cast bullets in the stock Glock barrel due to the polygonal rifling is overstated at best and flat out wrong at worst. However, it's indisputable that cast bullets do not stabilize with that style of rifling, and I've seen a clear...

    10mm Power?

Airman193SOS, the polygonal rifling issue will not affect reloads using jacketed bullets. Yes, if you're loading lead, you need to switch over to conventionally rifled barrels, such as the excellent Lone Wolf. However, there are some jacketed bullets that aren't much more expensive than cast lead.

Best JHP bullet for a hot 10mm loading?

I highly recommend 155 grain bullets, and I specifically use the outstanding Speer Gold Dot in this weight. I kick these up to 1350 feet per second in my S&W 1006, and they are very accurate, and more importantly, they really hang onto their jackets, unlike conventionally jacketed bullets, as...

Marlin 1894 .45 Colt: How hot can it handle?

I can say with confidence that the same loading data used in the Ruger Blackhawk/Colt Anaconda/Freedom Arms/Thompson Contender are safe to use in the Marlin 1894. The data for these handguns and this rifle top out right at 30K PSI, significantly above the rather sedate SAAMI standard maximum of...

Any suggestions for loading 225 FTX in the 45 Colt for the 460 XVR?

Folks, I have been using these for some time now, and I have to point out that these bullets were designed for RIFLE VELOCITIES, hence the groundbreaking soft polymer tip, something specifically created to allow spitzer bullets -- with their much better ballistic coefficients -- to be safely...

avoiding ear damage with powerful rifles

Kinda unwieldy, even disregarding all that it takes to get that extra bit of hardware fully legal, though. :scrutiny:

avoiding ear damage with powerful rifles

Malamute, you don't really have to insert plugs just as you're about to shoot. There already are electronic plugs that cut off with gunfire, allowing you to hear through them up until that point. You can simply wear them, adjust the sound amplification level (yes, they can act somewhat as...

    30-06 to 9.3x62

According to page 21 of the RCBS catalog, 9.3x62mm Mauser will fit in the same shellholder as the one used for the .30-06. http://outdoorwriters.atk.com/resource_library/catalogs/RCBSCatalog.pdf I'm 90% sure that means you won't have to change your bolt face at all because of that. SAAMI case...

avoiding ear damage with powerful rifles

It's just idle speculation on my part, but I wonder if they have some sort of helmet device with integral hearing protection to reflect back sound rather than conduct it through your skull, something reserved only for the most extreme noise levels. Sure would be uncomfortable for shooting, but...

    KickEez and the Ruger M77?

Well, I read and posted in this old thread on the subject of replacing the inadequate (at least for fairly heavy recoiling calibers) butt pad on the Ruger M77 with something much better for the job, such as the Limbsaver or KickEez. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=565472 Anyone...

    Went shooting today, UGH!!!

What the bleep? No range master or supervision of any sort? My own public range at least has a guy there to keep an eye on things.

    Rossi 45/70 OR Marlin 45/70???

Not that mine is an 1895, but only last month I bought a brand new Marlin 1894 standard (as in NON-Cowboy) 20" round barrel in .45 Colt, and I don't have any complaints. I'm under the impression that Marlin quit making them in .45 Colt a year or so ago, so it's possible that it was made before...

    Ruger m77 Tang Safety

Why grill the OP? Hey guys, not to sound bossy since I'm just a new member here, but I found this thread precisely because I had the exact same questions. See, the problem is that all the great new aftermarket recoil pads for the M77 are designated for the MKII version of the M77, with no...
