    Nikon riflescopes

The manager of a local gun store here wanted to know if any Nikon scopes were adequate for springer air guns. The answer he got when he called was that all Nikon scopes were guaranteed. He again asked if they could be used on springer air guns. Again the reply, all Nikon scopes are...

    Daisy 853 bargain

I bought one of these from the CMP. Out of the box it was one hole accurate at 10 meters (longest range I can get in my basement). Once the snow melts (maybe by June) I'll try it on a calm day at 25 yds to see just how good it is. http://thecmp.org/wp-content/uploads/DaisyUsedRifles.pdf

    Model 929 H&R Sidekick with 2" bbl

A friend dropped one of these in my lap and asked if I could fix it. Claimed it only fired half the time. First thing I noticed is that it would not cock in single action mode. One of the older ones since the firing pin is part of the hammer. Never worked on one of these so wondered if there...

    Keeping pan powder dry

A friend of mine swears by this stuff to help keep his flintlock functional in wet weather. wondered if anyone has any experience with it? http://www.rmcoxyoke.com/inc/sdetail/rmc_wonder_powder/6564/427

    Frame stretch

Many times I have heard the warning to keep loads light in brass framed pistols to avoid them shooting loose due to frame stretch. I wonder if the 1860 colt or the 1858 remington is more forgiving of powder charge before damage sets in on brass framed models? Having an ROA I don't worry too...

    Insomnia musings

I was wondering about twist rates and then wandered into the direction of twist. Would it have an effect? I would guess in a heavily loaded handgun, it would affect which way the gun torques when fired. With most black powder pistols, I doubt that you would notice it. Thinking about rifles...

    Ball fired from cylinder

Chain firing with black powder revolvers is often mentioned. I am wondering how much velocity a ball would have if fired from the cylinder only? Lots of fire and smoke for sure but how small the velocity?

    ROA rifling

I recently acquired a ROA and have had it out to shoot a couple of times. Mechanically, everything is great. But my groups are around 6" at 25 yds. I do much better than that with my Ruger Blackhawk in .45 which feels much like the ROA. While cleaning after this lastest trip, I noticed just...

    Cleaning frequency of ROA

Having purchased a ROA, one of the first things I did was to totally strip it down for cleaning which took most of an afternoon. The action was noticeably smoother after the cleaning and lubrication. How often should this complete cleaning be done? I would assume it is based on number of...

    40 cal REAL bullets

I took a chance, spent the money, and had a custom mold made for REAL bullets in 40 cal. Tried them out in my Seneca which has a Rayl rebored barrel in 40 cal with round groove rifling. Using 60 grains of FFFg, being a light weight rifle, it smacks me pretty well, leaving bruises on both my...

    Winchester model 1904 "Boy's rifle"

I received this rifle from a friend complaining that it is very inaccurate. Looking down the barrel, there is barely any hint of rifling. A thorough cleaning made no difference. Is it possible to wear out a rimfire barrel? I can also see some circular marks that seem to show someone may have...

    Mossberg 930

It is a long embarrassing story but I need to find a new stock and forearm for my Mossy 930. I asked Mossberg but got no response -- nada. Any suggestions?

    New handcannon

A new hand cannon with 12" Colerain barrel in .62 cal smoothbore, L&R lock and a special stock. Since I first wanted to have this gun built, I was concerned about the number of heavy caliber pistol that would crack the stock. So this one has a special stock. It is walnut, for want of a better...

Colt 1860 vs Rem 1858 accuracy

I have heard it argued that the colt has to be inferior in accuracy/precision to the remington 1858 because of the detachable barrel. So I wondered if anyone had ever put these two pistols into a machine rest to see just how well they do in comparison? This assumes that they would both have...

    New favorite rifle

Due to weather I have only been able to take this one out a couple times since I received it in November. Best fitting rifle I have ever had and hangs on target very well. 42" colerain A weight swamped barrel in .40 cal. Siler lock and single trigger. Custom made to fit me. Close eyes...

    Buckhorn sights

Like a lot of us, age has changed my eyesight. Need trifocals now and things never seem to be at the right distance for the windows on them. Using open sights has required me to go away from the dinky notch and fine blade front sight. With those, I might as well use the gun like a shotgun --...
