    Is 45acp fading away?

I can still get 7 rounds of 45ACP in a paper plate at 50 feet (most of the time), even with my old eyeballs. But I haven't yet shot a 9mm with which I can do the same. It may be because of my familiarity with my personal Colt 1911, but I'll stick with it. I have a S&W in 9mm, nice gun, shoots...

    How Many Rounds?

I learned a good lesson developing loads with my 458 SOCOM. I read a lot of posts favoring a certain round as "most accurate" at 35 gr.at 100 yards. I had loaded and shot 5 round groups at 0.2 gr spacings from 34gr to 37gr and had a nice 1 moa group at 35gr. But around 34gr I also had a 1 moa...

    22 S/L/LR Rifles?

Love this discussion. I learned to shoot (around 6 or 7 yrs old) at my uncle's farm. We hunted squirrels and nutria with a J C Higgens 22 Bolt action single shot rifle. A box of shorts was cheaper than L or LR, so we learned to be a good shot - shot placement was critical. At that time there was...

    The thumb safety

Darn good reason (for me) to stick to 1911 style pistols. I learned to shoot handguns on an old GI 1911 over 50 years ago, guess I ought to stick to what my body knows. When I pick up a semiauto, my thumb is on the safety. I would recommend that whichever system you use, stick to it, avoid the...

    Vibratory Tumble media

The secret to removing the black crud is dryer sheets. They clean your media, stuff sticks to them like a magnet. I add torn strips to my 50/50 mix walnut/corn cob and use the media forever. Brass is beautiful and I never add polish or anything else. I clean newly fired brass about 30 minutes...

    Why I'm not a hunter

I bagged my first squirrel with a single shot, bolt action, 22 rifle (J C Higgens $6.95) using 22 short. I think I was 7 yrs old. We hunted for fun and purpose. Unless it was a rat, a raccoon in the garden, etc, we ate what we killed. But after Vietnam, I just don't find it enjoyable, and it's...

The M1 Garand Rifle - Why Is It, "Heavy"?

That's a lot of weight and bulk, especially with the 10 round mags for the 308. The 556 is about 1/3 the weight, but the early M-16A1 had a real issue, pull the trigger and burp - mag's empty. Ammo discipline was a constant battle with the new troops.

The M1 Garand Rifle - Why Is It, "Heavy"?

My first time shooting a high-powered rifle was with the M-1 in 1965, on the Army "Train-Fire" course. It was a hell of a kick compared to 22s and shotguns of my youth, but I shot expert and loved the rifle. The first time I had my hands on an M-16 was in Vietnam, and I appreciated the weapon...

Long Range Target in 308 Win

With my developed loads and a Ruger American 308, I regularly shoot 1/2 moa at 100 yards. Haven't been to a longer range, but this is good enough for me. Not bad for a $300 rifle.

Be careful buying ammo and components from private parties.

Not just private parties either. I bought a box of Win Whitebox ammo recently from a well-known local store, privately owned. Contained mixed headstamps and includind some swaged military crimp brass. I took it back and in spite of their "no ammo returns for any reason" signs, they were anxious...

Best way to remove colored dye from cases?

I would try rubbing alcohol too.

    gun recoil

I was introduced to high powered rifles with the M-1 Garand, we fired 200-300 rounds a day on the Army's training course. A lot of guys were really beat up by it. I had an M16 in Vietnam and it felt like I was shooting a BB gun. Seems to me the 556 doesn't have any recoil. But the 458 SOCOM...

    Wrong Ammo

You know they do not match the box they are in, why would you trust them at all? If I had them, I'd pull the pills, dump the powder, size and reload as I want. Brass and primers are about the only things you can trust - and magnum primers are a possibility that could bump chamber pressure a little.

    What electronic scale to buy?

I've been using a Lyman Gen 6 for several years. Easy to use either with a trickler for one-off or as an automatic dispenser. For the latter, it is easy to unload and recover your powder from the reservoir. Downside is it is sensitive to movement. I set it on a desk next to my loading bench for...

Recommend a .308 Bolt Action Rifle?

Your budget should include the scope, I would plan on two-thirds of the budget in the scope. I bought a Ruger American 3 years ago and it's so lightweight I stuff the stock with rolls of pennies when I'm doing load development. My best load will shoot a half moa. With some commercial loads, I...

Are you old enough to remember when firearms were proudly displayed?

I remember scenes like that in all my relatives' homes when I was a kid. I started hunting about age 6 or 7 with my cousin in Louisiana, he had a new ($6.95) J.C. Higgins 22 bolt action single shot. We'd each spend 50 cents for a box of 50 rounds of 22 short - because Long or LR was too...

    Reliable low cost semi-auto

I have 2 1100s I bought used. The 20 gauge I bought 5 years ago and used for skeet . Still had a foil sticker on the gas valve showing installation orientation. I bet it hadn't had but 3 or 4 boxes of shells through it, it was made in 1967. :) I'd be embarrassed to say what I paid for it

    Priming on progressives

I find that priming by hand with my little "Green" hand primer is darn easy, mostly trouble-free (except when I screw up), and fast. It's one less concern while I'm watching all the magic on multiple stages of a progressive press. Since I introduce only clean brass to my press, I don't decap on...
