    Glock 19 opinions?

JTQ, The Glock 19 I 'have' is actually borrowed from a friend who has and prefers his 17. He just does not like compact. I am considering buying the 19 from him but have not had enough time to check it out enough on range due to work pressures. Enough means several 100+ round visits. I have...

    Funny little speed strips

beag nut: I have Ruger SP101 .357 (5 round). I find the speed strips can load cylinder a wee bit faster (maybe 1/2 second?) than freehand, BUT ... the speed strips are a great way of keeping precounted rounds easily available in your pocket. Avoids possibility of trying to load a chamber...

    Switching hands

I am right hand dominant and STRONGLY left eye dominant. On advice of instructor at Sporting Clays, I started shooting 12ga leftie. Scores went WAY up. Apparently this is not uncommon with shotgun. Also, I had little long gun time, so little to unlearn. Might this work for handgun...

Need advice (ccw revlover or auto)

mljdeckard, I REALLY hope I NEVER have a situation where someone is shooting back (or even shooting at all). I just try to prep for the one in a zillion case where there is an armed adversary.

Where do you place your gun in the car ?

Console in Fobus holster. When leave car, Fobus goes to hip. Would have on hip in car but angles/distances involvd make that uncomfortable.

What is the last gun that you bought?

Most recent (of my very few) is stainless 3 inch Ruger SP101 .357 revolver. This thing has amazing balance and remarkable accuracy (especially after I upgraded to Hogue Monogrip). Small enough for concealed, strong enough to stop anything shy of a grizzly. This has become my nightstand gun - no...

    Sharpening FAQ

I use the Apex. It can make any edge razor sharp once you master it. Recurves and daggers do take a LOT of practice. Hardest to master is dagger with very hard steel.

    what to carry running

I am very interested in this thread. I used to run a LOT (10+hrs/week) and may again if spine surgery works. Currently I cycle 6-10 hrs per week. One of my routes takes me through an area where there have been some trail muggings. Would like to know how to carry Ruger SP101 .357 or Glock 19...

    How important is eye protection?

I put on eye protection before ear protection. Hearing damage or deafness is bad, but can some times be corrected (cochlear implant etc). Busted eye is end of line.

    Glock 19 opinions?

Currently I have Mossberg 500 12 ga 6-round and Ruger SP-101 5-round .357. The reason for these are that they are easy to operate in case of home break-in or nasty outside encounter. Both are hard to jam or make malfunction. In my 'Handgun 101' class we were exposed to 2 revolvers and 4...

    Defensive Ammunition 101

The instructor who sold me the shotgun advised #4 buck. When I went to favorite local gun store, they advised #4 buck. CCW instructor advised #4 buck. Is anyone surprised that my Mossberg 500 has 6 rounds #4 buck?

    Funny little speed strips

If you cannot do it with your first load, you are too dead to ponder loader vs strips. Loader or strips are fine for range time (where there is no timer), which lets you do it with your first load.

    Little Disappointed With My Ruger

Ruger is THE BOMB for stainless revolvers. Not so for semi. For semi, Glock is the Bargain Bentley. Fewer parts to go wrong than most semi, harder to jam, easier to maintain. I have Mossy 500 12 ga, Ruger SP101 .357 (favorite gun ever), and Glock 19. Currently the SP101 gets the bulk of my...

    First handgun - load advice

THANKS, all. Will not bug you again until I need some new advice. And, FWIW, the Hogue Monogrip install was a piece of cake. Took less than 5 mins (maybe less than two) and needed no tool more exotic than a flat blade screwdriver. And the Hogue is WAY more comfy than the stock grip and fits my...

    First handgun - load advice

ArchangelCD Since I did okay on range with the +P I will stick with it at least until I can do 100% in 8 ring or better with .357. Group was small enough with +P that I am sure it can do its job of stopping the threat. And the newly installed Hogue Monogrip did a great job of taming recoil...

    First handgun - load advice

mljdeckard, Ammo is in very short supply here. I did manage to get a box each of fairly respectable defense ammo: .38+P Federal Premium 129 gr Hydra-Shock JHP .357 Hornady Critical Defense 125 gr FTX. Will keep eyes open for others, but ammo in Raleigh/Durham area is really scarce right...

    First handgun - load advice

hariph creek: Thanks for the good advice. And the reason for the 3 is that this will be nightstand plus concealed. The 2 has less accuracy and not good enough balance for the .357 round and the 4 is a bit much for concealed. Since I could not afford two, I compromised on the 3. 3 is...

    Ruger SP101 .357 rounds

What is your favorite ammo for this: 1) For 50-100 round range practice. 2) For 'day defense'. 3) For 'night stand defense' were muzzle flash of .357 may blind you. THANKS IN ADVANCE

    First handgun - load advice

mldheckard, Actually instinct trained so far at home would be the 12ga with .357 on waist. In addition to the huge stopping power, there is the fear factor. Creeps who might brave a handgun really fear shotgun. 6x12ga #4 buck @7yd makes a mell of a hess. I like the Federal HST idea. Thanks for...
