    Gatling vs Rifles

The Gatling firing cartridges pitted against riflemen firing cartridges would have been a fairer contest. Good fun, anyway!

Defective Barrel on Dixie Pa. 50 cal Pedersoli??

I managed to "ring" the bore on one of my rifles. It had been caused, apparently, by a grease cookie I had mashed down on top of the seated bullet. The cookie stayed on the ramrod and came off about 3 inches in front of the bullet. It created a bulge when I fired it that way, but the bulge was...

    Kentucky rifle

I have a cleaning attachment I got from Dixie Gun Works which is just a plastic hose fixed onto a fitting which threads into the barrel after the drum and nipple is removed. With the hose end submerged in hot water, you can pump it in and out of the barrel with your patched cleaning rod. I...

    Minié ball lubing

My last range session with my 1861 Springfield, I fired some of the best groups I've ever shot with it and I was lubing the grooves as well as filling the base level with the same lube Sharps59 mentioned. I'm not prepared to credit the improved shooting to the lube filled base, though. I'm sure...

    Patching a Pistol ball?

Percussion revolvers have chamber diameters, at least in theory, larger than the bore diameter. The ball is supposed to be oversize to fill the chamber which in turn makes the ball oversize for the bore. The ball should be rammed into the chamber bare and should leave a ring of sheared lead...

    Pedersoli Problem - 1874 Sharps

Don't know where you are located English Bob but If you are in the U.S., Pedersoli's warranty gunsmith is Lee Shaver in Lamar, Missouri. http://www.egunsmith.com/ You might give him a call, He's the kind of guy who's a friend you just haven't met, yet.

    Interesting patent

I might have to look into making one for my pocket navy. I had absolute fits with it blowing caps rearward and having them get down in front of the hammer in the hammer cut. I think I have it mostly fixed now but a modification of this sort would pretty much stop that from happening. I'd have to...

    Interesting patent

It's hard to see but does the ring itself become a sort of transfer bar and strike the cap? The screws in the bottom would allow it to have forward play if it was thin enough, but it would seem to me that it would require quite a bit more hammer force.

Do you know a pro gun cop?

I'm a retired State Trooper, worked 27 years. I worked for two Sheriffs as a Deputy Sheriff before that. I'm pro gun and always have been. I believe in concealed carry for everyone with a near religious fervor. Regardless of what we'd like at the above mentioned " live crime scene," the...

    Hildo...

Funny! Maybe you could rig up a sling swivel on a lug under the barrel, sort of like the express rifles have, and hook a sling in it with a stirrup on the bottom end. :eek:Make sure you have your foot in the stirrup when you shoot or it might swing in an overhead arc and break something...

    Nepalese P1853 speaks out!

I'd be curious how it shoots with .570 round balls and a .015 patch. You'd need a more substantial ram rod to try it but that would give you a ball park idea about accuracy. My 1861 Springfield (replica, alas) shoots round balls almost as well as the best minie load I've found, and better than...

    1000 yard long range performers.

As Rusty said, there's a balance that has to be achieved for everything to work properly and, again, I only have suspicions about what's really happening. The bumping up process apparently happens in the very first microseconds of the charge's ignition. The more mass it has by added length...

    1000 yard long range performers.

Hildo, I'm not sure I qualify to answer since I have nothing beyond suspicions about how it all works. My Volunteer rifle's bore mikes .451. I don't know how deep the grooves are by actual measurement. I size the bullets for it to .450. They seat with only the weight of the ramrod. When it's...

1861 Springfield vs. Enfield reproduction rifles

David, the drop they are referring to is the angle the butt stock departs from the line of the barrel. An Enfield's comb, or the part of the stock you snuggle your cheek against, is noticeably higher than that of a Springfield's. During the recoil generated by a .58 caliber minie ball, that...
