Why DO we call it that?

Why to "cock" a gun? The part of a flintlock lock, the firing mechanism of that type of gun, is called a cock. This is because it resembles a roosters neck and head. The flint is the beak, the screw that tightens down the clamp that holds the flint is the comb on top of the roosters head and...

    Rifled "cannons"

I did not discover this until a visit to the city park in Denver. There they have a rifled muzzle loading "cannon". I have always assumed all such guns were smooth bore. I do not recall the exact bore diameter but it seemed to be about 8 inches or so. Does anyone have any information on how...

    Bad Shots

I don't where to post this comment/question but I will try it here. Why are cops such poor shots? I understand that they are shooting in high stress situations but don't they train for this? An absurd number of shots will be fired, sometimes by more than one cop, and only one or two shots will...

    break action rifles

Has anyone had experience with both spring piston and gas piston rifles? I do not like the weird recoil of the spring piston type.

What we all know about the round ball.

1700 fps sounds way too fast for a soft lead ball. Speeds above about 900 fps can cause problems with lead fowling in the bore.

Grips for an 1858 new army

How does one get different grips for this revolver? The factory grips are very smooth and difficult to grasp well. Are checkered grips available?

A gun is pointed at you. What next?

Take advantage of reaction time. I carry a double edge dagger in the 4-o-clock position on my belt. The grip is quite slim, has no guard, and fits sheath and all in to the back pocket of my jeans very nicely. Add a carefuly folded bandana to the pocket and it is nearly invisible. If are close...

Misconceptions Under Which I Once Labored

Awareness A very good site to check out is www.nononsenceselfdefence/fringe areas. Add the foreward slash, the site has been somewhat hacked and without that foreward slash you end up in a street fighting site.

Has Anti-Gun Propaganda Made the AR15 a less viable defensive rifle?

Unless you live in a brick house I would avoid the use of a rifle. The bullet will almost certainly over penetrate your foe, exit your house, and enter a neighbors house with leathel energy.

    Muzzle loading patches

Who manfactures punches that can be used to cut patches from patch fabric? I need patches for my .36 rifle but the cost for such is absurd per 100 patches.

Will pistol primers work in rifle brass reloading

I have only a limited supply of small rifle primers but a plentiful supply of small pistol primers. Would there be any real objection to using the pistol primers for reloading .223 Remington ammunition?

Anyone ever try this ammo?: 5.56mm stamped: HCC 84

.223/5.56 Do not use 5.56 in a gun chambered for .223. The 5.56 has a longer case neck which may cause the bullet to be crimped between the case neck and the forcing cone in the barrel resulting in danger high pressures.

    Scary people at the range.

The bullet diameters of 38 special and .357 magnum are both .375. The only difference in the ammunition is the length of the casing. Therefore 38 special can be loaded and fired in a .357 magnum but the magnum rounds will not fit into a 38 special because the casing is .10 inch longer than the...
