    Browning BAR Mk3

I have three BARs. All scoped. All magnum. Early model - grade Ii - a little over 9 lbs; a safari - a little under 9 lbs.; a high grade with aluminum receiver - a little over 8 lbs. I also have Husquavarna with scope in a mag that runs a little under 8. To me the BARs are certainly comparable...

I Passed up the opportunity to shoot a nice bull elk yesterday morning at my house.

I don't know what planet you are on. I feed 120 head all summer. When season comes its time for revenge for destroyed bales, destroyed fences, and mutilated newly planted fields. I have killed them out of the bedroom window in my underwear. One year off the balcony. One year out of the barn...

bullet changes from 80's/90's and today

I loaded game kings through the 80s and early 90s. Many friends gave me boxes of 7mm 175 gr because they broke up at high speed. They worked well at 2700fps. About 2001 or so I bought a new box and they wouldn't hold together. I changed back to hornady interlocks round nose and got outstanding...

Interior secretary repeals ban on lead bullets

I find the actual article interesting in that the antigun people truely believe that because an animal shot with a lead bullet will poison the people consuming the meat. I have eaten meat killed by lead bullets nearly every day and have yet to have any lead uptake. Most everyone I know tend to...

What is your favorite style of hunting?

I prefer cross country horseback scans followed by jungle searches in 4-10 inches of snow. covering 10 to 15 miles a day on a horse is liberating and has been extremely successful.

What happened to hunting rifle stocks?

I have both midgrade and highgrade weapons. I never buy cheap junk. Like some of you I like the maintenance as it is relaxing. I hunt elk with a Browning BAR highgrade. When it was damaged in a nasty horse wreck I had it rebuilt with custom wood. I might have $3000 in the gun but it shoots...

putting down an animal - choice of weapon

I tried to finish big bull one time with a 22. I was promptly kicked in the nads. After I quit puking and he quit twitching the 22 slugs were mushroomed on the skull. In the 70s I knocked down a big bull with a spine shot. He had 67 inch beams and the skill to put in thumbtacks. Since this was a...

Is your interest in guns narrow or broad?

I seem to have an attraction to Browning BARs, A-5s, 45 revolvers and matching winchester and marlin lever guns. I have some husquavarna rifles but am a firm believer that you should have spares in case of a breakdown in hunting season. Guns are just tools and everyone should have the tools they...

    Idaho/Montana Hunting?

Jobs are tough. Be prepared to make one or get one before you come. Housing is expensive driven mostly by the well to do imports willing to pay anything to leave where they are from. Kalispel, Missoula, Bozeman are kind of liberal and expensive. Eastern and Central Montana is full of ranches...

    Boots

I agree! Like the vast number of shoes in your wife's closet, boots match the need and the conditions. I wear Whites loggers on dry rocky ground. They are custom made and have had one pair since 1981. I use two pair so they don't get sweated out. If it gets wet or a little snow, I wear Whites...

    Liver anybody?

As a graduate wildlife biologist one of the classes is parasitology. One of the main storage sites foe parasite larve and cysts is the liver. The other is the lungs. I have killed two elk with the cyst growths for the wolf tapeworms. Word to the wise --- guts is guts, leave them in the woods.

How many licks to get to the center of an Elk?

of the many elk I have killed, only the spine hits have caused them to drop. Lung and heart shots take a little bit for them to run out of blood. It's mostly a function of how big the vessel was that was breached. My longest was a mile with a one lung hit and the normal is about between 50 ft...

    Cleaning bar mk2 safari

I have used BARs extensively since 1983. Mostly 06 and 7 mag. I clean with hoppes (intermittantly with the copper cleaner) and oil very lightly with rem oil. Use one drop on each bar cycle then wipe the excess off. I using hornady one shot on the outside with a spray and then wipe it off. It...

Pants for Cold Weather Elk Hunting?

Woolrich Malone pants - there is room to move around and no binding. Filson is similar but more expensive. They are just under $100 and I get at least ten years out of them. On horseback I wear elkhide batwing chaps. They shed water and add insulation. I never get cold.

Deer season over, with a lot of firsts! (long read)

Wait till you get a cow elk to pound her foot as she walks into you. They get mad at things they can't explain. Just stand still and wait till they walk into the open.

    Bad shoulders

My doctor told me that the bones that make up my right shoulder socket are gone. I shoot a 7 mag in a bar and have no pain. The doctor said not to consider replacement until I could no longer lift 30 lbs because that is all I would be able to lift after the rebuild.

    4350

Is IMR 4350 and Hodgdon 4350 interchangable?
  19. S

    Hodgdon vs IMR

For many years I have used Hodgdon instead of IMR because an old gunsmith told me that H was burn rate stable between lots and IMR was not. I believe Hodgdon owns them both now. What is the difference between them?

Browning BAR - Durable Enough to be a Good Ranch Rifle?

Never had any problem with the charging handle. I did sew a flap on the scabbard to cover the bolt slot to limit snow into the action. By sewing it on the leading side I can still use my bolt guns. The safari models (90s) have a lever that keeps the bolt open if you push it up after opening the...
