How to free a rusted gun

I have used the ATF/ Acetone mixture many times. It is absolutely amazing the amount of penetration, rust, and gunk that it achieves.

    Herters muzzle brake dilemma

A good customer recently purchased a very nice old Winchester 100 .308 semi-auto rifle. It came with a Herters "Jetsons" looking muzzle brake installed. The brake screwed off easlily enough but we're having a really hard time finding a replacement brake or a cap to cover the threads. If...

    7mm-08, Need Input

A couple of years ago, I bought a gunshow pig in a poke Mauser. The gentleman carrying it around did not know what caliber it was in and no one around the show seemed to be able to figure it out. Since it was sitting in a pretty nice piece of wood and was a complete rifle, I offered him $125.00...

    AAI Escort

The AAI stands for American Arms Inc. They were the importers. The pistol was manufactured in Italy by Sites, now defunct. The Escort is relatively rare. They were only imported for 2 years. 1994-95 I believe. There are several threads here on THR concerning it.

How to recreate the wood finish on an older (mid '50s) Winchester?

Brownell's also sells a product called French Red. It is very close to the old Winchester color. It has a lot of saw dust in it and fills the grain quickly. PM me about bluing your butt plate. I can add it my next run of steel very cheaply.

STI Guns / Happy Consumer Report

After a trip to STI's facilty, owning, shooting, and working on a slew of STI products, I have formed the humble opinion that STI manufactures the highest quality handguns of any major manufacturer. I am not fluent in the language of violence, but I know enough to get by where it is spoken.

    Dumbest rumor you've heard?

From an employee at the range where i took my CHL course, " They keep your range score on file, so if you shoot a really high score the courts can prosecute you if you kill someone in self defense. They will say that you were a good enough shot to just wound them to stop the attack." After we...

    Tell your short story

Another gun smith and I work most of the local gun shows. We generally have a few pieces for sale and trade along with lots of parts. We mostly go as a way to advertise our sevices. I have a very large plastic pretzel jar with a 2A Defense Fund sign on it and will ask people to donate a...

    Another Shooting Range Suicide? Attempt

Sorry, but there is no link to the Statesman that shows this story. This is out of the Austin American Statesman print edition today. This is all quoted from the blurb. Police: Woman shoots herself at indoor range A woman was critically wounded after she walked into a shooting range...

    Lead Removal/Handgun cleaning

The best formula for lead removal that I have found is a 1:1 mixture of vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. I plug the barrel with an old ear plug, fill it, and leave it for 10-15 minutes. A brush and a patch finishes the job nicely. One note of caution, vinegar is an acid. It can remove...

    Belton, TX gun show

This is normally a pretty good show. Lots of folks come to actually buy, sell and trade. In the past, I have seen very few mall nijas, gang bangers, and other ne'er do well types at this show. This time-- who knows. If you go, drop by the RNR gun repair table. Richard and I will be there...

IL Rifle Assn Director speaks to Obama's legislative history on the 2A

Preaching to the choir Megistopoda, Thank you for finding and posting this. I can't believe there has been no serious discussion of the 2A this election cycle by either candidate. I sent the post and link to most all of my mailing list, including my Democrat friends, in hopes of...

    Can SS be blued?

Yes. DuLite makes a solution for hot bluing SS. It is a complex and expensive proposition but it can be done. We send some custom work to a fellow in Lousiana for the process.

    Range wear - why?

I generally wear my camo wet suit and full scuba gear when going to the range. Dressed such, I can practice my stealthy approach and engagement from the creek of my sworn enemies, those pesky crows and their assault beaks. They are reaping death and destruction on my garde... er,... tactical...

I don't think one should name a gun until it's been used defensively. Thoughts?

I didn't name this one. A LEO that carried it did. He called it "Valium" because he said people seemed to calm down if he had to bring out of the leather. When I refiinished it, I had it engraved on the slide before I blued it. Sort of a respect thing, you know?
