Thanks for all the replies.I have several 22LRs and can use those for close work.Just looking for something in the 100+ yard catagory.Everything I read leads me to believe the 22Mag would max out about there for coyote and ,even then, head shots are necessary for a quick kill which I always...
I would be using these in a Savage 11.Only thing I can think of would be a groundhog or raccoon/skunk at night when I don't want the report echoing around to worry someone.May be a good excuse to get a 22 Mag.
Is it possible to safely load a 223 down to 22 hornet velocities ? Only ask because of maybe wanting some rounds with a lower report for shooting when close and not waking up the whole valley.
My rifle wears a 20" barrel,if this makes a difference.
My .02.When ammo for the 7mm/08 is priced comparable to the .243,.308,.270and30/06,more people will try it.The average guy who just wants a deer rifle and buys ammo at a box store can't see/justify paying 7.00 or more a box extra
.Hard to compete with the .270 that way.
I am curious about the development of the 270 caliber.I'm not doubting the capability of the caliber or the cartridges built around it.They have certainly proved their worth many times.
My question is how did anyone settle on .277 as a caliber or.308 for that matter?I can see the 24s,26s,28s etc...
I am thinking of getting a 223 in a 20" barreled Axis for a truck gun.Are they any quieter than a 243 if I want to take it night calling for coyote/fox? Not many people where I live but don't need to make people wonder what's going on.
My neighbor did that with some tannerite set up against an...
Thanks for the replies.I was thinking somewhere in the 50 -55 grain area. This will be an "in case"rifle for the pickup or tractor. To actively hunt at longer ranges,I have a 243.If going for deer , a30/30,7mm08 or 30/06 would be used. Not to say the 243 isn't enough but I have heavier calibers...
