Red ramp front sight - yea or nay?

Most of my revolvers have red inserts in the ramps. I think they are terrible for shooting at paper targets on the range, but fantastic for field or woodland shooting. As I live in the boonies and shoot almost daily "in the wild," I love them! But for bullseye type shooting, I much prefer the...

What good are .22 LR shotshells?

Carpenter bees! My house is built of rough sawed cedar and the bees gather on warm spring days to do their damage (actually quite severe). I use an old Remington smoothbore .22 for the task (3 to 4 times the range of a rifled .22). It can take a month of rather fun wing shooting to complete...

    First Serialized Firearms?

What manufactures first routinely placed serial numbers on their guns? I imagine it may be Colt on their percussion revolvers. I have set of Smith and Wesson "tip ups" (six models ranging from late 1850s to about 1880) and all are serialized. These early Smiths may be the earliest serialized...

How old is this ammo? And what is this caliber??

When I was a kid, I bought some of those identical 7mm Mauser shells (in those same boxes) to shoot in my just purchased South American contract Remington single shot rolling block military rifle. Both the ammo and the rifle were antique surplus at the time (around 1960 when I was 11). The...

    S&W Mod 60 3" .357

My 60-15 in one of my favorite Smiths. I carry it regularly around my wooded acreage and also often use it as a CCW. I have added a different front sight and changed the rear blade to a higher one. Also added a spring kit and Nill Grips. The gun was fine to begin with, but now approaches...

Bullet weight and point of impact; revolvers vs automatics

Great thread! Explains why I am much more concerned about having adjustable sights on my revolvers than on my autos. Also alleviates some of my concerns about trying super lightweight, high speed copper bullets (like Honey Badgers) in my autos. Anybody try the Honey Badgers (or equivalent) in...

    S&W Model 41

My 41 was shipped in 1980 and is one of my favorites. It, along with my SW 17 and 18, are my favorite .22 'paper punchers.' My 41 has also been quite a successful rabbit bagger. As you can see, I have three barrels. The 5 inch light-weight field barrel (on top in photo) changes the total...

    NEW Ruger M1 Carbine!

Midway has Remington soft point in stock. Expensive.

Ah the good old days of toy guns.

Ditto! Same gun and same procedure for me. Only we would scrape the paper covering over a "bunch" of unused caps to gather raw powder to place under the BB. Wow! Quite a rush for a 10 year old. I think the brand name of the gun was Nichols. We also had to shorten the barrel a bit to get rid...

Painted my LCP II front sight

I did about the same on my LCP II. I put florescent orange over a base coat of white enamel. It shows up way better than the "night" sights on my LCP Max do right up to almost complete darkness.

    Ammo for 648

Mine does great with Winchester 40 grain jacketed hollow points. They also shoot great from my SW 51 and 651 wmr revolvers. I shoot CCI WRFs (shorter case with 45 grain bullet) in them for a quieter, lower powered experience.

Colorado to introduce Assault Weapons ban including semi-auto pistols & shotguns

Almost the same bill, word for word, that just was signed into Illinois law. Almost exact. Wonder which anti organization is providing this legislative "template," ready to be signed and submitted by willing legislators in any number of states.

    S&W model 35-1 J frame, finally !

Love them! I have an early 50's pre-35 built on an improved I frame (called a 22/32 target). I also own a 4 inch 34-1, a 51 (3.5 inch .22 Mag), a 651 (4 inch mag stainless, adjustable sights, with matching .22 long rifle cylinder), and a 63 no dash. J frame centerfire "kit" guns include a...

    Best revolver upgrades

The Hogues that came with my 629 .44 Magnum Mountain Gun made shooting the revolver truely miserable. Way too narrow. They now wear a pair of stained maple round-to-square Ahrends grips. Much better!

    22 LR Shot shells

I use them in a smooth-bore Remington 580 single shot bolt action for the carpenter bees that attempt to destroy my cedar sided home. Constructive pest elimination and LOTS of fun.

    Stevens tip-up 22 short.

Midway has .22 cb short for 11.99/hundred. Actually fairly common.

    3" .357 Lightweight?

Ditto on the 3" Smith and Wesson 60-15. I live in the boonies on rural acreage and this is one of my favorite woodland carries. I usually have it loaded with four mid-range .357s (Golden Sabers) and one shot cartridge. If I want to plink or target shoot, I shoot light .38s. Best of both...

    M17 & gummed-up charge holes

I used a finish reamer (Mason) on both my 17 and my 18 a few months ago. Made a WORLD of difference. Wish I had done this decades ago. It is like owning entirely different revolvers. No more hard clambering and ejection is a breeze!
