Finally found caps today, but now I’m seeing 457 balls aren’t available anywhere. What gives?

open carry for blackpowder revolvers ?

I would not hesitate to carry my ruger old army. It has never misfired, ever. It’s probably not as practical as my sub compact Springfield XD 9, but it would get the job done no problem.

Latest Walker Book - "The Colt Walker Army Revolver" by Charles W. Pate

He’s got one on Smith and Wesson 44 Americans I’d like to have. It has a list of all the documented survivors of the first 1,000 made for the military, of which one I own that was my GGG Grandpas (not known to Charles at the time when he wrote the book).

Hello from one ready to enter the world of black powder.

I have one of the first 44 American Model 3 Smith and Wesson revolvers that was produced in 1870 that fired a centerfire round. Wish I could find some to shoot it. It was my GGG Grandpa’s. They were the first large bore center fire pistol produced with Colt coming along in 1873.

How long do black powder revolvers last?

Steel, and if you’re concerned about longevity, buy a Ruger Old Army and let your great great great grand kids worry about it wearing out someday.

Keeping A Modern BP Rifle Loaded

My understanding is you can leave them loaded for a long long time with no issues. In fact there are a lot of reports about guns loaded since the civil war that fired. And canon balls.

Put the grease under the ball

Yep, this is the thing to do. I take those felt wads and dip them in a mixture of crisco and bees wax. Way less mess. It’s the way to do it.

    Walker vs Dragoon

I have a newer uberti Walker, and the loading lever has never dropped. I shoot 50 grains. I’ve heard people say that some are better than others for the lever dropping. I may have gotten lucky.

    .44 caliber longrifle

I’d ask your neighbor to shoot it, and if it doesn’t blow up, then you’ll know it’s safe.

    Shopping List Please

Mine came with a nipple wrench, so hopefully you’ll get one. I keep it pretty simple. I use a powder flask, 50 grains of 3f, a wad I treated with a mixture of crisco and beeswax, and 457 ball, and 11 cap. That’s it. I do lube the arbor with a little white lithium grease. Walkers shoot way high...

    Ordered a Uberti Walker Colt

Make sure you keep the bluing well treated. I thought I was pretty diligent on keeping mine treated, and then this happened. Only shot it about 3 times.

Smokeless powder in a BP signal cannon.

As long as your life insurance policy is in good standing, I’d say go ahead, and good luck. There’s no way in hell I’d have the balls to do it.

    No caps?

I work for an auto parts supplier and they have already banned lead wheel weights in many states, and eventually will be all states. Those states have to use zinc.

    No caps?

I live by bass pro. Actually worked there for 10 years starting 1978. Bought my ROA there in the 90’s. Guess I should just go check it out. I never shop there because of their mark up prices.
