Pietta Bolts - Problems and Questions

Everything you're saying here is correct. And the process of fitting parts to guns rather than guns to parts is normally the proper procedure; smaller parts to main components. I fully agree. I've been shooting and working on percussion revolvers for 30 years, learning mostly out of...

Pietta Bolts - Problems and Questions

You didn't read it carefully. The bolt and hammer I used for the comparison were new, as in right from the factory. They weren't from one revolver to another. And they weren't oversized either. Pietta doesn't make their action parts like it was done in the old days. They generally go in as...

Pietta Bolts - Problems and Questions

45 Dragoon and Jackrabbit1957, thanks for the comments and info. It's enlightening to be informed that the bolt which worked properly in this gun is really an 1873 part. That must be why I couldn't find one exactly like it when looking for earlier versions of the Pietta open-top percussion...

Pietta Bolts - Problems and Questions

Here's an update to this old thread for anyone who might have been interested or curious. Maybe there are other percussion revolvers out there with this same issue. After a recent, closer examination of the gun, I determined that the bolt problem was actually a frame problem. Every new Pietta...

Pietta Remington 1858, RGST36, is it on same frame as RGST44?

Yes it does. I missed that when I went to the page. I went straight to the Locate-a-dealer box, put my zip code in and got results. That's evidently all out if date.

Pietta Remington 1858, RGST36, is it on same frame as RGST44?

Black MZ was discontinued for awhile after a fire at the Alliant Powder plant. Now it's available again since not sure when. Haven't kept up, but I just checked their website after seeing your post, and saw this: https://alliantpowder.com/products/powder/blackmz.aspx I think Black MZ or...

Pietta Remington 1858, RGST36, is it on same frame as RGST44?

Interesting info. Makes me wonder how Triple 7 and 4F black powder would compare in a test.

Pietta Remington 1858, RGST36, is it on same frame as RGST44?

Everything I know about Triple 7 is what I've read. Have not looked for or happened across formal testing results, and have never tried it, but definitely should do all of that. Soon. Triple 7 FFFg produces higher velocities than equal volumes of 3Fg black powder and 3Fg Pyrodex. Since it...

Pietta Remington 1858, RGST36, is it on same frame as RGST44?

Some guys use 4Fg in percussion revolvers and have reported no problem with it. I'd guess it's not a safety hazard in light loads, but maybe there's a limit. Don't you think 30 grains of 4Fg in a revolver could be pushing too far?

Pietta Remington 1858, RGST36, is it on same frame as RGST44?

Although I haven't experimented with 4fg (and probably won't), I definitely agree with you -- the Uberti and Pietta New Model Navies are great performers, and they're the magnums of .36 percussion revolvers. In the debates that come up now and then about the value of percussion revolvers for...

Pietta Remington 1858, RGST36, is it on same frame as RGST44?

Maybe that extension is helpful. The plunger in mine squarely makes contact with a ball to push it in, or squarely enters the chamber if the loading lever is dropped with no ball to push in. But if the loading lever is operated with the cylinder removed, the front end of the plunger drops down...

Pietta Remington 1858, RGST36, is it on same frame as RGST44?

The Uberti Remington Navy is a few ounces lighter than the Pietta version. This Pietta is 45.5 ounces unloaded. It's been a flawless shooter with very good accuracy. To fully clarify the above reference to the Navy's plunger diameter, the second photo shows how it fits both the .44-caliber...

Pietta Remington 1858, RGST36, is it on same frame as RGST44?

The Pietta New Model Army and Navy Remington replicas are the same except for barrel and loading-lever length / plunger diameter, caliber, and chamber size. Not a historically accurate copy of the original, which is a con for some, but maybe a pro for others. For me it is. I especially like...

Pietta Bolts - Problems and Questions

The first percussion revolver I ever had or shot was an ASM Walker. It was somewhat beat up when I got it with scratches and a badly cracked grip. It had a short arbor also, but I didn't know what that was all about back then; only that the cylinder would contact the forcing cone if the wedge...

Pietta Bolts - Problems and Questions

Hi BlackPowderWarrior, it's in good working order now, but not photo ready. I'm doing some cosmetic work on it. Congratulations on your success in extending the life of a good old ASM!

The Future of Black Powder Shooting

There are other reasons we could think of that influence the cycles of rising and falling black powder popularity. It's not only about shooters neglecting to do their part in promoting it. Consider for example: - The modern firearms industry has very little interest in promoting black powder...

Pietta Bolts - Problems and Questions

Well they certainly needed to be hand fit in times past, even from the factory sometimes. I spent many hours back in the early nineties trying to fit hands and/or bolts in all the percussion revolvers I had at the time - 1 Pietta, 1 Uberii, and 1 ASM. Fitting a new hand in the ASM Walker was...

Pietta Bolts - Problems and Questions

I have a couple on hand. Spares for an Uberti 1861 made in 1993. So they're about that old. I think I'll go find them and do a visual comparison.
