I'll have to disagree with this - I'd really hate to have to break my shooting grip to operate the pistol. Luckily, with my slightly larger than average hands I can easily reach the controls of pretty much any service pistol, HK USP 45 and 1911s included.
Most if not all do and there's no requirement to pass a background test or have any licenses to rent a firearm (or purchase ammo with a rental) at a range in CT.
If the range has poor ventilation, it is normal (and not healthy). I'd recommend finding a range with better ventilation and shooting plated or jacketed bullets instead of cast lead indoors to reduce your lead exposure.
There's actually precisely one NATO standard that defines 9mm NATO ammunition; STANAG AOP 4090. It is a longer document but in a nutshell:
test barrel: 7.8", 1:10 twist
bullet weight: 108 to 128 grains (inclusive)
coal: 1.138" to 1.169"
kinetic energy at the muzzle: 400 to 600 ft.lbs

I really don't think so, especially if qualifying with a .45 ACP / .45 Long Colt allows you to carry a .44 Magnum.
What is the course of fire like and what kind of target is used?

Your card is in some jeopardy ;)
I have two Sako .375 H&H rifles, a L691 Hunter with a 24" barrel and a M995 carbine with a 19.5" barrel, and I have to say that the stock geometry makes a big difference in felt recoil. The M995 is more pleasant to shoot despite being quite a bit lighter.

This is actually how some European parliaments (the Finnish parliament for example) operate - a proposed law is vetted by a Constitutional committee before it goes on the floor for a vote.
Product development was happening approximately around the same time for both pistols, but the USP came to the market in 1993, whereas first Mark 23s were delivered in 1996.
