    38 special defensive loads

I’m confused. Hunting I’ve never been shot at. I have been shot at and the adrenaline is 10Xs anything I have experienced hunting. My most adrenaline driven hunting has been shooting chukars, trying to get 4, 5, 6 in a covey rise. And I shot a bull elk, with a bow, at 6 yards, and that was...

    MEC Super 500

Go to the MEC site for charge bars and bushings. MIDWAYUSA sells them as well. I’m not familiar with the Super 500. But most of their charge bars are compatible. Buy a shotshell reloading manual.

    38 special defensive loads

Everything here has value. But the thing missing is recoil. Shooting a 2” barrel .357 mag isn’t something you can get back in target quickly. I have a Ruger SP101, 2” barrel. After lots, and lots of practice, I decided that plus P loads were way better than full strength.357 mag loads...

    Happy with TAC

When the scare was on in 2020, I bought all the .223/5.56 powder I could get my hands on. I ended up with 23 lbs of TAC, 12 lbs of AA2230, 4 lbs of H335. Maybe a couple others. 1st load I worked up was with TAC. I haven’t used anything else since.

Another hole in the memory question.

OK, I guess “if it plunks, it’ll work” doesn’t count if you go shorter than SAAMI specs. I guess I took for granted EVERYONE would stay within SAAMI specs. I stand corrected, kind of.

Heading to the loading shop today.

Looks like a good selection of wads. I need wads!!! I have 21 bags, but not the right ones. But Precision Reloading has em, I just need to order them.

    PowderThrough.com, wonderful reload data website

I use loaddata.com. There may be better and/or cheaper options but I bought the prescription and use it A LOT. Plus my manuals, of course.

Another hole in the memory question.

Sounds like you’re talking 9mm? You’re correct, if it plunks, it’ll work. I’m guessing you’re using mixed headstamp brass? I always strive for more consistency than .0045 but if it’s mixed brass, that may be the best you can do.

    Packing it up. Again.

Good luck on the move, and shop!!! I’ve been in the same house 31 years. A rental while we were building it. 6 years in the previous house. Lived in 2 houses growing up. At 63, I’ve only really moved 3 times, including as a kid. I don’t count the rentals while buying a house or building a...

How do you use a turret press..

This post was very informative to me. I loaded with a Rockchucker for 30’years. Then got a Dillion 550C. I skipped the turret press. I can see the benefits of a turret. But I’ll continue to load hunting ammo on the Rockchucker, trickling out every powder charge. And load .223, 40, 9mm...

    270 win 130 sst loads

In my experience, the Hornady SST is an inherently accurate bullet. And a very “soft” one. even at 7-08 velocity, it’s like a lil grenade. She’s killed several antelope and a mule deer with it. They all died quickly. But meat loss was an issue in her 7-08. personally, I’m a fan of...

Old powders I wish I could try

That’s what they say. And I use HS6 along with WSF and Longshot for heavy 12 gauge loads. Yet I have seen old data for W540 that differed from HS6 data, on the same page of a Lyman Shotshell reloading manual??? Specifically, W540 having more velocity and less pressure in a particular load. I...

Tell Me About Using Fractions of a Grain In Load Development

The percentage method is the way to go. I load for .338 (75+grains) 7mmRM (63 grains) .243 (40+ grains) 22-250 (38 grains). That said, I was taught 35 years ago to go up .3 grains. Just the way my mentor did it and it’s an habit I developed. When getting near max, I even drop to .2 grain...

CCI 41 vs Win 41 primers

I’ve seen the CCIs regularly, haven’t seen the Win. Last week the CCI #41 were $104/1,000. The CCI SRM were $94/1,000. These prices were at the closest Scheels. I got the SRMs for $10 less, tomorrow I might go the other way. When I put them away, I realized I don’t need anymore SRPs...

    Decent day shopping

I paid through the teeth for my last RL22 purchase. It was May 2020, and they asked $54/lb. But I did it, cause, like you, it will probably get me to the finish line. 3 partials, 1 old full, unopened plus that purchase. But at 63 grains a pop, it goes fast!

whats the hardest round you've loaded?

I haven’t had one. .380 is tiny, and my hands aren’t as nimble as they were 10 years ago. But I’ve only done .380 on the single stage. Firing up the 550 for it soon, that may change my outlook. .224 bullets are tiny. But even loading several 100 at a sitting, on the Dillion isn’t a big...

    Spp be Smpp

The general rule, which I have read on THR nearly 1,000 times, back off 10% and go for it. That said, SPPs are available all over the place. If you want to pay the “new normal.”

    Leaded or unleaded?

I’m the last guy to listen to. I have a few 1,000 lead projectiles in my reloading room, “Extreme bullets.” I only bought them in 2020 because they were the only thing available. I’ve only loaded plated and jacketed. But I have 600 lbs of lead, and a couple of molds. I want to learn this...
