    .22 for squirrel

As far as I know, the squirrels around here aren't on anything, but they are wild. They don't poke their head out and pose for the shot, well sometimes they do,but you can't count on it.I don't eat the heart, lungs or head, and if I loose a forleg that dosen't bother me to much.I do know some folks...

    .22 for squirrel

Hollow point 22LR,head or chest. They will run when they hit the ground.Never had much luck with a solid on anything. We must have tougher squirrels around here.I use a Marlin, model 39 lever with a 3x9 scope. If hunting cat squirrels I use a 20 guage.I also use a Ruger .22 pistol when I want to...

    Elk hunting secrets...please share.

I've been hunting elk since 98,it's been the most fun and the most frustrating. We usually hunt Colorado in Sept in bow season,it's easier to get vac time then.Anyway my elk experience is limited, but we hunt pretty much like we hunt here at home, find the sign and wait on them,or spot and...

Wolf Attack (Pics not Suitable for Some)

The old fox hunters I grew up around, didn't want to catch the fox, they just wanted the dogs to chase it.The race was what it was all about.I don't go out to eat without packing,I'll sure have something if theres a critter around big enough to eat me.I don,t know much about wolves except what...

Wolf Attack (Pics not Suitable for Some)

H&H I thought your post was great, the rhetoric didn't bother me.Some of the posts had my jaws getting tight also.Hunting with hounds is a great sport, but it takes more time and commitment than most are willing to give.My Dad was a coon and cat hunter, but mostly a fox hunter. The hunt...

help me kill coyotes in W.Washington

I,m way down here in Texas, but I've fixed a lot of coyote problems over the past 20 years or so.Please don,t use posion bait, you don't know what you might kill.If the problem is serious, the steel jaw leg trap would probably be the most efficient control method. They are not to hard to catch, but a...

    accurate rifle?

My GPR 54 cal,is now shooting much better. After reading the post by Articap, about the sights and stock configuration,I inspected the rear sight more closely.I found that it was quite unstable when adjusted to high.I tightened it down and filed down the front sight to raise poi.My first three...

New Great Plains rifle...bend in rear sight normal?

I have a Great Plains Rifle,54 cal,and the rear sight does lean toward the shooter. It is somewhat adjustable, but I did have to do quite a bit of filing on the front sight to get on target.

    270 WSM

30-06,thats about how I have allways felt,if something works,I stick with it.I like mauser actions and classic calibers, but I haven't tried anything new in a while.Anyway, sons are supposed to bring old dad a rifle every now and then, aren't they?

    accurate rifle?

Hey Dr,I have a great plains rifle with the slow twist also, got it a month or so ago.I,m also dissapointed in the accuracy with a patched ball.Three inches at 50 yards is not acceptable, and I,m not getting that!!I like to hit what I shoot at.My old CVA Hawken .50 with 1:48 will do a lot better...

    270 WSM

I've been a long time user of the 270 WIN,and it's allways been my favorite cartrige.A few days ago my oldest son brought me a Browning A Bolt in 270 WSM, and a couple of boxes of silvertips.I've only fired it a few times, but it handles well and has a good trigger.Anybody out there have any...

What is a good rifle for medium-large game

The .270 win is my favorite, but all of the rifles and calibers mentioned are good for most of us.You may want to think about one of the .300 magnums if your just looking for one all around gun.It may be more than you need for deer and antelope but it really shines on the long shots.I haven't...

    Hog Huntn'

I hunt hogs all year, but when it' hot I slow down some, unless someone just wants them killed off there place.I've used the .270,30-30,303,.300mag,.44mag,22LR,and my bow.Shooting through the armor on a big boar can be a little tricky, but a fairly heavy well constructed bullet should work ok.Light...

    Carry two rifles

Hey Smoke, you're right that horse can really make a difference.I've been hunting the SW corner of Co. since 1998. After one trip I was hooked.September will usually find me totin my bow up on or around Stoner Mesa. One thing I found out quick was, a mile in Elk country was about 10 here at...

scope mounting, how do you do it?

I've allways mounted my own scopes, just about how you describe you mount yours.I use some loctite on the screws on the mounts and the rings. If the eye relief is right and the crosshairs look level and the screws are tight, everything should work ok.

    goin' coyote huntin'... any tips?

Most of us are trying to mimmick a dying rabbit, either a jack rabbit or a cotton tail.I have used many different brands, plastic and wood and they all worked pretty good.A varible pitch is good if you practice with it.If the distressed rabbit isn't working, sometimes a yelping puppy will bring...

    Carry two rifles

I can't see the need to pack around two rifles, one is just going to be in the way.Any rifle in the .270 to 30-06 class will do nicely, near or far.If I have to pack to far,the pistol usually stays behind also, why do I need a pistol for protection, when I have a rifle which is far more effective,at...
