Optic Suggestion for Henry 45/70 Gov't

I think the standard scope with the "bell" at each end looks better than the straight tube scopes on a Lever gun. I have a Sears Ted Williams 4x wide angle on my Marlin 30-30 and a 3-9x40 on my BLR (223). Both have Weaver tip-off mounts so I can use the iron sights in dense woods. No...

Where has all the wood gone?

You're right, some of it comes from the roots!! ;)

Where has all the wood gone?

I worked at a sawmill in VA for a year which had a kiln. They brought the wood down to 17%. That seems to be the general rule for building lumber, and if you have bought any lumber lately, you can almost watch it warp and twist and not waste a lot of time. The 17% is what they said "air...

Where has all the wood gone?

Air-drying wood will not bring the moisture content down enough to prevent it from warping. It needs to be kiln dried down to a 5%-7% moisture level, what I believe is called "furniture grade." A cabinet-maker friend of mine had his wood brought down to a 3% level and said it would then settle...

    budget rifles

Nothing wrong with giving advice, but an open statement without explanation isn't advice. For example, "The 783 ain't so great that I'd bother." How does that help anybody? What's not so great about it would help the OP, and others, to make a better choice. The 783 is a budget rifle with...

    budget rifles

This generally happens when a thread get this long; we lose sight of what the OP stated, "I've been looking at purchasing a new budget level rifle."

    budget rifles

These are all minor repairs that many gunsmiths can do; that is why I wouldn't worry about getting a 783 or other bolt actions for that matter. I have made obsolete parts for different guns, and there are many parts from different guns that are similar enough that they can be modified to fit...

    budget rifles

State how; I'm waiting breathlessly. We would all like to learn something new. I believe I had to replace a firing pin spring in one bolt and repaired one rifle by replacing an extractor in the last 10 years, and most of my friends and customers have bolt actions. Just my experience. Give me...

    budget rifles

Not much can go wrong with a bolt action unless you drop it off a cliff, or you forget you leaned it against the front bumper of your vehicle and you drive off. o_O

    budget rifles

What about the Remington 783's. I have one in 30-06. If you can still get them, they are a good value.

    Reloading press

I would go for the Lee Classic Turret Press and use it as a single stage press. You will have the option of adding the indexing rod, if you want to take advantage of the multi-station turrets. The single station press dead-ends your options.

Rockchucker Supreme Kit or Lyman Brass Smith Kit?

This is where the Lee Classic Turret press, with the quick-change turrets, really shines. Once set up for a particular load, you just swap out the turret for another load and your off and running without having to do any adjustments. I have turrets set up for 30-30, 30-06, .223, .357 magnum...

Rockchucker Supreme Kit or Lyman Brass Smith Kit?

Try Acme for bullets: http://www.acmebullet.com/45-70 I use their coated bullets in various calibers and really like them.

    Why are 3" revolvers rare?

You can get Stainless Steel Blackener 370 from Caswell Plating (www.caswellplating.com) which does a nice job. I've used it to touch up several pistols for customers and used it to create a "three-tone" 1911 for myself. (https://caswellplating.com/stainless-steel-blackener-1-pint.html)

    .223 Misfire Mystery (?)

I had a similar problem with some PMC FMJBT 55 gn .223 ammo. Three rounds in a row failed in my BLR, so I put them in my AR and 1 fired and 2 did not. Same thing happened with another box of 20 of the same ammo. Definitely bad primers, and this doesn't give me a lot of confidence with the PMC...

    How good are Taurus Trackers

I have been using a Taurus M94 .22 in my pistol classes for years. Hard to tell how many rounds through it. Very reliable. The DA trigger pull is somewhat high, but I like that as it teaches good trigger control to the students. I also have the Trackers in .357 mag, .44 mag, and a M905 in...

    Another Savage Bedded.

I don't know about "West" epoxy, but the JB Weld that I use will thin out and run when heat is applied after mixing. The heat allows it to smooth out nicely. I just had the occasion to use it again and added heat to smooth it out. Must be the difference in epoxies.

    Gun Oil Viscosity?

If you're looking for oil that "stays put" get some machine way oil like Mobil Vactra Medium Way Oil, or use a chainsaw bar-and-chain oil. They have special tackifiers that help them to stick in place. (Because it doesn't say "Gun" lubricant, doesn't mean it won't work, and it will be less...
