Ok, THR members, where do you buy your real black powder?

I buy the real thing, BlackPowder, at "THE GUNWORKS" in Springfield Oregon. They also have a great on-line catalog full of Bp related shooting supplies. :)

    .54 Cal Sharps Loading Question

There is considerable leakage with the percussion Sharps, wear safety glasses or goggles, this seems to reduce or eliminate the danger. I had one a few years ago, then sold it due to not liking having my face and mouth filled with smoke. The shear plate is supposed to seal the breach to barrel...

    bear grease

I have a large quantity of rendered bear grease and use it as patch lube, works fine. If the weather is hot it can be made more solid by adding bee's wax. If you just wick up enough grease to barely saturate the patch the wax would not be needed. Bear grease mixed 50/50 with bee's wax makes a...

. 72 caliber Pedersoli Kodiak Rifle

I use a .715" Rb patched with .010" linen over 130 gr of FFg. No problem with the ball in the second barrel slipping. But check whatever load you decide to use by firing the first barrel several times and check for slippage. Don't forget to uncap the barrel that you are checking for slippage...

    10-ga blackpowder blank loads

I use my side by side 10ga muzzleloader to hunt with in rain and snow. Mine is browned rather than blued, but what works for me is good old WD-40. It has some serious anti-corrosives and water displacing ingrediants. I swab it out and wipe it down with Wd-40 each day after hunting. Just make...

New Great Plains rifle...bend in rear sight normal?

The rear sight is tilted slightly to the rear to reduce reflections and this normal, if it is twisted to the right or left this would be abnormal but correctable. If you must file the sights to correct the point of impact, I recomend that you get the load that you wish to use before any filing...

    I'm BACK......sorta

When you are on the road traveling, stop by any city or county library for InterNet access. Most make no charge, you might have to wait a litle bit to get in line. The libraries all have very fast service.

    Minie bullets in handgun?

With the "sealed barrel Bp Rocket" that would be one way to reduce recoil! Seriously, with good barrel/breeching you could not blow it up with FFg or FFFg, too much powder in a pistol barrel the excess will burn out front for one great flash. You could have the barrel tear out of the stock or...

    Alox ..bullet lube

Is this the liquid lube? Did you apply it to the patch or the ball? Or are you shooting bare ball?

    Unloading a BP

I would heartily recomend removing the caps first on a revolver before handling the cylinder. If you drop the cylinder it can get real interesting around camp when it starts goin off, the caps are exposed on many cylinders so they can and will fire if struck.

Green Mountain barrel for Lyman Trade Rifle...15/16 or 1in??

The Green Mountain barrels are fine shooters, can't go wrong there. The figures; 15/16ths and 1" refer to the outside diameter of the barrel measured across the flats. The 1 in 70 refers to the rate of twist of the rifling, one complete revolution in 70". With this twist you will be restricted...

    Ultimate Xpress Hunter In-line

I have to agree completly with getting close or else it isn't hunting it's sniping! Any velocity greater than 0 Fps is approaching 2400 fps, doesn't mean it's there. I'd be dubious about claims of velocity that high with Bp or any of the replica powders as the 45-120x31/4" doesn't get anywhere...

    powerbelts

If you are concerned about the PowerBelt slipping while hunting, try tapping the muzzle downward on a block of wood (Muzzle down) then check to see if the slug moved with the ramrod. Uncapped of course! If it moved, try dental floss across the muzzle under the slug as you seat it. This will...

    Kodiak Express Double Rifle

Recoil with slugs/conicals will cause the slug in the clean unfired barrel to slip. Tried wrapping the slug with dental floss to tighten them, also even PP some, it worked. PRb is simpler. That was one of the reasons that I passed the earlier .54 on to someone else. Big Round balls penetrate all...

    Kodiak Express Double Rifle

Berries? Bears? Both are black bears and berries. Also very close, this lead to the second barrel as cheap insurance. Most black bears run off unless you've done something foolish, like wounding him. Also they tend to run the direction they are looking when they get hit, so it helps to break...

    Anyone use a muzzleloader year-round?

You won't give up much to a modern shotgun other than time required to reload. I use an old Dixie Arms 10 ga. double for birds, works just fine in the rain when I'm grouse hunting. A single barrel is much safer to reload. With a double gun you better pull the unfired cap, as you will be working...

Any Whitworth shooters or owners here?

Read about the Whitworth for years, sounded interesting, finally found a Parker-Hale. Swaged hex slugs with PP shoot fine, but a lot of work. Tried a Lyman .451 mold, with soft lead , a tablet backer cardboard, and Ox-yoke felt wad they swage to the barrel perfectly! Shoots great with 90-130...

    Kodiak Express Double Rifle

I used to own a Kodiak in .54 caliber, never could get the barrlels to regulate with any load that I tried. Did not want to deal with two rear sights, so I sold it. Maschoist that I am I bought a .72 about three years ago from Cabelas. Was lucky, both barrels shoot within an two inches...

    hunting elk with roundballs?

I've had very good luck with my underhammer .62 caliber shooting PRB. Bigger is better. IMO a 54 is adequate, with PRB a .50 is marginal. I shoot to break shoulders and get both lungs. Down and out, no chasing. Any muzzle-loader should be limited to 100 yards or less due to limitations of...
