    Gun for buffalo??

I go along with o-s-o. It has to be a .45-70 (I'm not into BP). It's the only cal. that the Buff should be shot with. It should also be with a very large lead bullet. :)

    Deer hoist/winch set ups

Butcher I know used to do the same thing but used a small winch on a rack instead of a vehicle. Worked very well. He placed the golf ball as stated in a piece of pelt up around the neck and just turned the winch on. Nice thing about this was he could stand right there as the skin was coming...

Not sure who you are asking, but I use a Summit Viper.

    Lamenting lost lands

Yup, I hunted the same land for nearly 20 years. It was a very nice piece of just about 175 acres. In NJ, that is like gold. Well the one owner died, the sons took over and didn't get along with the other owner (Uncle) and sold their piece. That left me about 90 acres for 3 years. Then the...

    Got one yesterday!

You're right about the carbon arrows. I just switched to them with 4" vanes a week ago from alum. with 5" vanes. The carbons are without a doubt a lot faster esp with the shorter vanes. I kept the Muzzy fixed 3 blade broadheads though. I just like the way they always perfom for me with...

    Cleaning Birds

OK, I shoot a number of pheasants every year and I'm always up for new ways to clean them. This standing and pulling method sounds pretty good. Question (I think I know the answer but what the hey): The bird is on it's back when you step and pull or is the back facing you? Thanks

    45 LC

I assume you are talking about a black bear. If so, the .45 LC will stop one. I would also feel very comfortable using my reloads in one of my S&W 25's for bear. No douby in my mind they would work. I've only shot 2 black bears in all my years of hunting and both were shot with .44 mag...

    Winchester .44 Trapper Carbine

I had one of these years ago. I used the Horn 265 grn. bullet in mine. It worked well in my Super RedHawk as well as the Winny. The 265 is a nice med. between the 300's and 240's. I thiink the load was 21.0 grns of W296. Mag primer. Shot well in both and accounted for 2 Black bear from...

Bird Dog Training. Anyone else getting ready for upland season?

Yup, getting ready here too. Even though the state season doesn't open until Nov 13, the private preserves open Sept 1. I'll be taking the Drahthaars out to get a bit of practice in before the state season opens. I don't know how much my old gal will be going this year though. She's...

    Best O/U

My vote goes for the Browning Citori Feather. Although I am kind of partial to my 40 year old Winchester 101 Pidgeon grade in 20 ga.

What is a good place to buy 1100 short barrel?

Not sure how the 11-87 would compare to the 1100 in functioning with a short barrel, but Remington makes an 11-87 LE in 14". Standard 18". I would think if you played with the gas ports as has been suggested, you could make it work. The choke would be another issue.

National Association of Chiefs of Police "pro-gun"?

If you are talking about the IACP their stance by the Board Members is anti CCW. I know, I belong and have sent them letters protesting their stance. However, I am sure there are many Chiefs, Administrators etc. like myself that are pro gun etc. But our views rarely get the light. Just...

    Old Glocks still going?

I've got a 17 that I bought on Oct 10, 1987 for $370 with taxes etc inc. That gun has been upgraded over the years when upgrades were recommended and the mags have new followers and springs. It has had 1000's and 1000's of rounds put through it by me and others. Not a problem with the...

Our early California Deer season about to begin

Bob, Our bowhunting goes right through the rut and into the gun season in Dec. Those big boys get pretty careless when seeking out that "special" female. :D

Our early California Deer season about to begin

You guys are lucky. We have to wait until early Sept for the first part of bow season to start. I've got a brand new Summit stand I can't wait to climb with.

    W296 26gr

I use 26 grns of W296 with a 200 grn HP out of a 4" 29 and that's a bit of a hand full. It's real nice out of my 9.5" SRH though.

    exMaryland legislator kills hunting dog

If he shot one of my dogs, he WOULD be as dead as the dog. There is NO excuse for such and accident. Except that maybe he is related to the Kennady's.

    45/70 questions

As kudu stated, with reloads or some of the custom ammo available today and the right gun, the 45-70 is all you need for almost anything. I know my Marlin Guide gun with Buffalo Bore ammo is more power than I need for anything that I hunt. :D
