    AK shopping

I had a WASR-10, bought new. Traded it in for a "Paratrooper" SKS in less then a year, and haven't looked back. Not only was it less accurate then even an AK has any business to be (about 6-8MOA, even with aftermarket trigger and Mojo sight), but it actually jammed twice in about 500 rounds I...

    Century Arms WASR-10

Keep in mind these really shoddy made/finished, even for AKs, and you can easily get a lemon with them... I had one that wouldn't do better then 4" at 50yards, and that after I put Mojo sight and decent trigger group on it! Plus, the groups shifted as it heated up. And that was NOT the case of...

Russian Mak went full auto, shot my hand.

My guess would be someone honed the sear too much on this Mak in the past. I have heard about Maks going auto for this reason, from an army major back in Russia. He was competing in the army shooting competitions where they used service weapons, and he said it was common practice for the...

If New Dehli can figure it out, why can't Washington?

Guys, you are cracking me up talking about what infrastructure the former communist block emplyed to keep a secure border, and about the high tech stuff to be used on the US/Mexico border! Let me tell you what made the former USSR border so secure that very few people even tried to penetrate...

    AK accuracy

Come on, AK is no M16 for accuracy, but it isn't this bad either. Even with an average quality AK, a decent shooter should be able to hit a chest target out to 200 meters most of the time (if I remember correctly, it was a standard range exercise in Soviet/Russian army). Alex.

Question for NYS High Roaders: SU-16 Legal?

Yes, it is public (I think it is county operated). The fee (for a day) was about $10 - 15, can't remember exactly. 50 and 100 yard for rifle, bench shooting only. Range officers are really vigilant at enforcing safety rules, but otherwise generally nice guys, go out of their way to be...

    mosin nagnant info...

Regarding the 200 gr bullets: I tested some Brown Bear (edited, I realized it wasn't Wolf but they are listed with the same ballistics) 200 gr SP in my new Mosin 91/59 carbine just this last weekend. I sighted in with Polish silvertip surplus first (at 100 yards), then shot a 5 shot group with...

Question for NYS High Roaders: SU-16 Legal?

secamp32 - there is one more range I know of, also on LI but not as far out as Calverton. Huntington range, off route 110, less then an hour drive from Brooklyn. I just went there last weekend. They allow any rifles, but "no rapid fire and no more then 5 rounds loaded at one time". Let me know...

    Mosin trigger/sear work questions?

OK, now it makes some sense. Overtravel can cause you to jerk the trigger after the break, but before the bullet has left the barrel. Probably a minor variable, but I understand why at least competition shooters would want to avoid it. Well, I am not a gunsmith, but here is what I would do...

    Mosin trigger/sear work questions?

I liked the idea with the set screw to adjust trigger pull (a link from the page you posted) better. A simpler and more elegant modification, and can be fine tuned with the whole rifle assembled, just take the bolt out and you can reach it with a wrench! Sure it does not address overtravel, but...

    Mosin trigger/sear work questions?

I did my trigger work last night. Polishing the sear and trigger surfaces didn't produce any noticeable improvement in trigger pull length or weight, just made it a little smoother. Apparently, that sear could take quite a lot of grinding without getting into trigger safety problems... But I...

    Mosin trigger/sear work questions?

Thanks for the replies! The burr is really some steel "sticking up" along the contact edge of the sear.. kind of like you sometimes see on a badly sharpened knife edge, only bigger. Looks like it is really asking to be removed. I am considering shimming the sear too, but it probably...

    Mosin trigger/sear work questions.

Hello, I just posted a thread on the Rifle forum, then decided I may get more answers by posting a link here as well. After all, the questions I asked are of a gunsmithing nature. Here is the link: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=130166 I would appreciate any replies...

    Mosin trigger/sear work questions?

Picked up my new M91/59 last night, took it apart and cleaned/oiled everything (surprisingly, almost no cosmolene on it, except some inside the bolt). The trigger actually feels pretty good (not a hair trigger, but quite smooth though long single stage pull). However, I noticed that the very...

Legality of driving to NJ range with rifles from NY?

Sorry, an additional question: it is possible that we will go to a range just over the border in PA, then I will be just driving through NJ to pick him up on the way to PA. Any difference from NJ legal point of view? Alex.

Legality of driving to NJ range with rifles from NY?

Hi guys, can you give me an advice on the legalities involved? I want to get together with a friend in NJ for some shooting at his local range, and wonder if it would be legal for me to bring my rifles (locked, unloaded, in the trunk, of course)? My rifles are legal in NY, actually even...

    Mosin-Nagant small accessories?

Hi guys, I couldn't logon to THR last night, so posted this on TFL. So far the only suggestion I got there was "Tennessee Gun Parts" which has a cleaning kit and ammo pouches, but not no stripper clips. Reposting here, hoping for more suggestions. I just ordered my first Mosin (91/59 from...

Brazen shooting leaves two dead in Manhattan

I just got some interesting background info on the "heroes" of this real life drama from a friend. The friend's parents happen to be neighbors of the murdered woman, they have known both her and the (ex)husband (the murderer) pretty closely for years. They are in a state of shock (the mother at...

    Postmen always shoot twice...

Unbelievable! I would have been extatic if it happened, say, 10 years ago. In my former life (seems like ancient history now) I was a poor student in Moscow and held a part time job with the Moscow Post Office for several years, delivering cash. We had to make do with issued mace spray or...
