I think RC Model is correct. His post brought back a memory of my dad saying that this pistol was set up to fire 185 grain match ammo. I found one of the packages for the recoil spring and it is a 22# Wolff. I suspect that dad replaced the original spring with a heavier one at some point, and...
I field stripped it and it does have the undercut slide. The serial number is 306xx so I assume it's an early one. My dad bought it about 1970. I also think I found out why it isn't feeding the 185 semi wads. I counted the loops in the slide spring and there were 32. The coils are also pretty...
I've got the original spring--it's the one that slams the slide. The old national matches had an 11# recoil spring but I think mine has a 16# as original.

Thanks for the reply. I have shot 230 ball in my Colt as well, but there seems to be a lot of slide slam with these light springs. I think I switched the 16# slide spring to a 18# and it tamed it down some. I also changed the firing pin spring to a heavier one and that helped as well...
I want to convert my 70 series Colt to shoot 230 FMJ ball ammo. Anyone have suggestions? I assume I'll have to change some springs as the original ones seem to be on the light side.
Trent,
The pic of your grip position is exactly how I was taught (By an FBI instructor) to fire a sixgun. By adding downward pressure with you left thumb, it's easy to form a very stable grip. Try it out by dry firing and you'll get the feeling of how much pressure is needed. Just remember...
I adjust by backing out the ram and turning the adjustment knob, closing the ram and checking OAL, then repeating as necessary.
The problem occurs at a certain point in the die when it seems to freeze and I have to use pliers. At this point, I have backed the round out of the die. I also start...
I do raise the handle. I'm talking about adjusting the die. I loaded six rounds but I had to get the initial setting by using pliers. All six rounds are tight and I do mean tight.
I'm loading 38 special with 158 gr LFP at 358 diameter. When I get to the seating die, I have to use pliers to turn the knob to get the bullet to the crimp groove. Is it the die or am I not belling the case mouth enough. The bullet is a 15 brinell hardness. OAL comes out Ok and I'm using 4.1 gr...
Load it with 32 H&R mags for light recoil and plinking. Or 32 S&W longs, or 32 S&W. Any of these rounds have light recoil in my 32 snubbie. The Federal 327 85 grain JHP has moderate but not punishing kick.
Model 29,
Lee 2nd edition lists h110 23 grs for a velocity of 1413 fps in a 240 gr JACKETED bullet. This is a starting load--never exceed is 24 grains. Min OAL is 1.600.
Looks like H110 is used more in heavier lead bullets and some light jacketed ammo.
This is 44 Rem mag--not special
