got it worked out! being an AR 15 newby and mechanically inept, did not realize that the elevation index wheel and the elevation knob were capable of rotating independantly when the screw is loosened. The "bottom part" of the elevation wheel is what needed to be rotated after the screw was...

just tried it again... wheel wont turn when screw is backed out, with or without wrench in place. on the bright side, the wheel still bottoms out at 6/3, so I guess I haven't screwed anything up. Very confused:confused:

That's my problem... the wheel wont turn if I leave the wrench in place. The hole for the screw appears to extend into the wheel, so the hole for the screw rotates away when I turn the wheel. Hope that makes sense.

I've wondered about this too. I'm new to the AR 15 world; just took my Bushmaster M4 out for it's 1st shootiing session. Chambered bullets that were ejected without firing had slight but noticable scratches. I think this is normal.

Never had to do that. Why design a gun that is an absolute horror to disassemble? I guess we have the M1 (or M14) to blame for the Mini 14 design.
