1858 Remington 5.5 in. barrel shoots low

So I bought a Pietta replica 1858 Remington New Model Army revolver a couple of years ago. I finally had time to take it out and shoot it last week. It shoots very low. I had to get within five feet to hit the coffee can I was using as a target, and it hit at the bottom of it when I aimed...

    BP guns for home defense?

Actually, there are unloaders that use compressed CO2 cartridges (the kind used with pellet guns) that you can push against the nipple after removing the cap. Very easy to use, but you should unload it into something that can contain the powder and ball that will be ejected.

    Taurus PT145 Millenium Pro

Shot mine for the first time today. It's accurate. My son's hand dropped the mag twice. You have to grip low. Limp wristing will result in failure to feed the next round. Otherwise, very nice and accurate. After my son was alerted to the limp wristing, all rounds were on target. As my son...

    Stranger in the woods

Just a thought, but perhaps the guy who was given a ride was also taking a risk with a stranger, and was in a jam that made it necessary, after all he didn't know the original poster, and the original poster was armed! My truck got stuck on a fishing trip once, and I had to hike out 8 miles...

Almost shot neighbor's dog, right or wrong?

Anyone who thinks a pit bull will not be unduly aggressive needs a reality check. They won't be so to their owners, but to a stranger they definitely will be. A neighbour's new pit bull got loose, came into our BACK yard through a hole in a fence, and proceeded to kill six of our caged rabbits...

    .45 Doubt

Wrong tool for the job. For possums, I've found that a Mosin Nagant M44 bayonet does the job well. They have killed our baby rabbits and quail. Ventilate both lungs at once and they are done. If armadillos are similar, should do the trick as well.

    Nagant revolvers

Mine shoots .32 H&R magnums just fine. Cases bulge to fit the cylinder, but that's not a problem.

My defensive handgun experience last night (5/20/09)

Other posters have mentioned that you "knew" him. I don't think that's the case. You didn't know him any more than you know some guy you drive past every day on the way to work. Your red flags went up, and for good reason. He hit your subconscious, and later evidence bears that out. Had...

    Cleaning with Mineral oil???????

Yes, a large portion of the salts can be mechanically removed, but not enough. I tried this once. I actually used mineral oil. I had a nice shiny bore, nice shiny cylinders, and the next week there was a nice layer of rust all over. The problem is that the salts will actually adhere to the...

    Cleaning with Mineral oil???????

While mineral oil won't hurt, you do need water to remove the corrosive salts. I will explain why. Solvents are of two types: polar and non-polar. A polar solvent has a charge on the ends of the molecule. A non-polar solvent does not. This has to do with where the electrons and...

    Montana street gangs

I've seen plenty of elk tracks in my deer hunting area, but never an elk. OTOH, I've seen large herds on a dairy farm next to a freeway where the hunters can't get them. They are not stupid animals... About 11 years ago we were at Redwood National Park and a herd of them came right into our...

Gun Run A Good Thing Right?

Absolutely it's a good thing. I purchased a WASR-10 and an SKS previously, and knew what would happen to them after the election. I would have bought more for later re-sale after the election figuring they would be a good investment, however I have put all of my funds into having a bunch of...

Guns? Commissar, I was the victim of identity theft. When you find that guy, let me know because I'm really mad at him. I serve the Glory of the Revolution!

    Caps for Pietta 1858 Remington

#10 Remington caps are not available in my area. The #10 CCI caps had serious reliability issues. Just the moisture from getting cold and warming up, or from being under my coat during hunting was enough to ruin the caps. I picked up the magnums when my local Sportsman's Warehouse was out of...

    Caps for Pietta 1858 Remington

So I got the 1858 Remington with a 5.5 inch barrel from Cabelas, it's a Pietta, and I put the CCI number 11 magnum caps on it, no powder or ball just to test it out. It misfired on about 2/3 of them. I figured my caps must be bad, so I put them on my 1851 Colt and they fired just fine. They...

Reality has set in...an non-warrior mentality.

I remember that doom and gloom. They were predicting ten thousand deaths on our side, the news media that is. I wanted to volunteer. I was in the medical NCO school at the time, and I figured with the reports on the news I should stay in the advanced training course to be able to do more...

Reality has set in...an non-warrior mentality.

Very true. As a National Guard medic, I did very well in training. First serious injury I encountered on an FTX in Korea a few months after AIT, I was not prepared for the adrenalin dump. I had to force myself to work through it. It was hard, I was shaking. Got kudos from the physician who...

    My child's keeper

I think the first image would be perfect if just a little bit of shadow is placed in the background for contrast. I didn't get the 44DE reference either. I thought Desert Eagle. My wife was all over it, though. She had to explain it to me. And no, I don't need to turn in my man card...
