    FEG quality and price

My experiences with the FEG HP clone are detailed here: http://www.geocities.com/kemays/bhp/feg.htm

    S.A. Loaded...in pieces

The one-piece FLGR's aren't nearly so troublesome. With one of them you just reassemble it much like a standard 1911. There is nothing good about the two-piece guide rods.

Refinishing a pitted and rusted Colt 1991A1 Commander

The best solution is to remove the pits entirely. Any other approach will be a half-measure at best and will be something you probably won't be satisfied with in the long run. Most competent gunsmiths should be able to take the metal down just enough to get under the pits. I have done this...

Hello - been away a while - which poly .40?

Another vote for the XD. I have two now, a Tactical and a Service model. I use the Tactical for competition and it's been completely reliable. I shoot both lead and FMJ reloads, and the XD takes them both in stride. I have about 2500 rounds through it so far. The Service model I bought...

I need your opinion. Quality Poll.

I voted SIG as having the best quality (by a hair) but the SIGs aren't my first choice. I prefer the Berettas. The SIGs have a ridiculously heavy trigger and I'm not a fan of their unique sights. I had an HK USP years ago and won't consider another one except perhaps the P2000.

WHat handgun has far exceeded your expectations?

Beretta 96 Compact L. I picked it up cheap secondhand, and didn't expect to enjoy shooting it so much. In my opinion it is just the right size compared to its bigger brothers. And something about the 96 design really tames the .40's recoil. It has been extremely reliable, digesting several...

    Good but Cheap Service handguns.

I don't know what you consider cheap but you can probably find the following for $350 or so. Inglis High Power S&W or Colt M1917 .45 ACP Argentine Sistema 1911 P08 Luger (mismatched shooter grade) Radom S&W .38 Special S&W "Victory" .38 S&W models are around $200-250 Tokarevs can...

    Jags and slotted tips?

Because some solvents like Sweet's need you to scrub the patch back and forth in the barrel for about 60 seconds.

    Cleaning

I use Royco's CLP by default. This is the current mil-surp stuff, with no Teflon in it. It seems to be at least a good a solvent as Hoppe's, but won't do much for copper fouling. Prior to Royco I used BreakFree CLP with good results. When I have a really filthy gun to clean I'll reach...

should I shoot right handed or left.

The shooting world is no friend of the left handed shooter. You will be asking for a lot of grief if you want to shoot left handed. Most guns are set up for right handed users. I am left eye dominant but right handed. I have managed to overcome this by shooting with an isoceles stance...

What gun were you the most disappointed with???

Probably the Kel-Tec P11. It had the longest, hardest trigger I've ever used. Replacing the hammer spring helped some but not nearly enough. The rear sight had to be drifted half out of its dovetail for the bullets to impact at POA. After a couple hundred rounds, the barrel hood began...

    Jags and slotted tips?

Sticking it through like a bowtie will work, but a better way seems to be inserting one corner of the patch through the slot, and winding the rest of the patch around the jag. This way no metal should be able to contact the bore.

    Jags and slotted tips?

I have some of those brass caliber specific jags with the point on the end. I absolutely hate them. They are way too tight, even with the patch trimmed way down to the smallest possible size. And half the time the patch falls off the jag before I even enter the bore. They might be good...

The one you're sorry you let go...

Thanks. How do you like the pimp grips?

Free gun! Which of these would you choose??

I'd buy the Beretta solely for the reason that it's an expensive little bastard and should have some pretty good resale value.

The one you're sorry you let go...

I've sold quite a few, including a SIG P226, Glock 23, Glock 30, Springfield Champion, HK USP .40, Steyr SPP, Astra A-75, Kel-Tec P11, and a few more I can't recall. I don't regret selling any of them. I didn't enjoy shooting any of them with the exception of the SPP. On occasion I have...

    550B Maintenance

I've loaded about 30,000 rounds on mine over the past 5 years or so. Apart from keeping it oiled and cleaning it occasionally, I haven't had to replace one part, not even the teeny tiny little plastic ones. I bought the spare parts kit when I installed but haven't needed to use anything out...

Gun Grease versus Other Lubricants for Hot & Humid Climates - Opinions Sought

I'm a heavy user of CLP, but have also used grease on my autopistols here and there. I've noticed that BreakFree will evaporate fairly quickly (though leaving a film behind). Much to my surprise the Royco CLP I'm currently using on my Commander has stayed put -- and in liquid form -- for over...

    Picks for great overlooked guns?

I think S&W 3rd gen autos are categorically underrated. In particular my 4506 has the best DA pull of any auto I own. Their "value line" is also good but because of their poor resale value you can usually get used stainless 3rd gen S&W's for $300-400.
