Accurizing a Mini-14 target, Adjustable Gas Block??

While you're at Perfect Union, check out GunDoc's trigger jobs - well worth it! 3.5# trigger that breaks like glass is a positive step towards accuracy.

    .45 Colt Powder

I started with W231 since that's my go-to non magnum powder. At 7.5g, it's just about right. However, after posting here and other places asking for suggestions, I got the feeling that I should try Unique. Boy am I glad I did! 8 ~ 9 grains was the suggestion, so I did. I'm enjoying 9 grains...

    7.62x39 handloads

    H4198 and 150g NBT - sweet combination. I shoot them in a Mini 30 for 2" @ 100 yards.

    .357 magnum or .44 spl

44spl IMO. I can control it better, less flash and recoil, faster follow-up. .357 relies on velocity, .44spl relies on bullet weight and diameter. Both work.

    308 or 30-06?

Both overlap and the differences are as follows: .308 = short throw bolt .30-06 = long throw bolt No big whoop. The case is larger on the .30-06, so realize that for any given bullet weight, the .30-06 is POTENTIALLY faster. This means that while in factory loadings a 150g round may be...

Ruger .44 mag carbine or Mini-30?

Cast bullets WILL NOT work in a Ruger .44 carbine due to the gas port - you'll plug it up. Jackets only. I don't know if that makes a difference in your selection, but I had to tell you. I'm going to try 150g cast boolits in my Mini 30 shortly. I replaced my gas tube with a smaller one...

    .30 Carbine versus bear?

I have to reflect earlier suggestions on a 30-30 or perhaps a Mini 30 with 150g SP bullets. A Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 downloaded to acceptable levels would work too. The .30 carbine gained a poor reputation for a reason. That said, it's a whole lot better than nothing and would feel...

Which of these two rifles for home defense carbine, with a twist?

I'm going to go aganst the grain here - how unusual... ;) My personal experience shows me that a rifle, even a carbine, is too long to use in a house with hallways and small spaces. Short shotguns with a pistol grip - OK, but other than that, not so much. A 1911 with night sights is the...

    Remington 1917 Eddystone

Found a sporterized 1917! Blue is deep, rifle is 5 groove button drilled, wings removed professionally, cartouche's abound! Love the flaming bomb! Heavy as heck! I don't need it and I have several other 30-06's, but knowing this was issued and carried before its transformation thrills me...

A question regarding the pick of my first rifle

.22's are great, CZ's are great, 10/22's are great, Savage is great. Start with a .22 and go from there. Lots of folks like .308 for an all around rifle in a bolt gun. Folks like Marlin's too. Lever action with a pistol cartridge is accurate and cost effective. Add a scope and they're...

    Best Gun Store Purchase Surprise?

At the local pusher's and he handed me a nice 30-06 Browning - a 1972 FN Browning with controlled feed/ejection. Dirty and surface rust here and there. $350 OTD. Took it home, brass wooled it, some oxpho blue where needed, floated the barrel and cleaned and waxed the stock. Looks brand new...

Hogs with .357 - thoughts on bullets?

Get someone with a Lyman 358429 to send you some. 170g from wheel weights and a true Keith. These will do the work. Load them over W296/H110 - somewhere @ 15g, check loading data and work up. You'll find these to be very hard hitting and penetrating, perfect for hogs.

    Removing Lead from SAA Barrel?

I have a Lewis tool and used it over 20 years. They work, but the copper Chore Boy trick plain works better. I also use cleaning solution - Shooter's Choice, or just plain synthetic oil when I do it because for me at least, it works even better that way. Wrap a good deal of Chore Boy around...

    I am looking at purchasing a S&W Model 29

What most people didn't realize when they bought all these 29's back in the day was the importance of a proper grip fit to their hand. I like smooth wood Hogue's, but Ahrends, Spiegel's or some other top end grip will make the recoil much more acceptable. Of course, this leads to better...
