This one was my grandfathers. It was made around the same time as yours.
I killed this deer with it this past hunting season. Very good combination of rifle/ cartridge. If you don't like it , I know a few folks who would.
$400 is a fair price. Does it have double triggers and a cheek piece on the stock? I have one in 22-250 and one in 270. They are both well used and I wouldn't let them go for that.
Some folks can't get over the safety, which can be a little awkward, but once you get used to it, it's not that bad.
I think the different factor is what got my attention. Every other bolt action out there, with the exception of Blaser and early military guns, all look the same to me. This rifle is different and I think some folks just don't like different.
I'm with eagle1899. Mine is in 308, but I have yet to shoot it. I have heard alot of negative about this gun from people who consider themselves authorities on rifles. The only thing negative I have to say is I wish the magazine was metal. Others will say it's ugly, it's heavy, blah, blah, blah...

Anyone have experience with these rings and bases? I am particularly interested in how difficult they are to mount and holding strength. Thinking of trying one or the other for a new .308. I am leaning more towards the Conetrol.
