Police Gun Turn-In Event: Wait! I'll Buy It!

Tomorrow in Sarasota, Florida, the local police are going to have a "Done With The Gun" turn-in event. I didn't see any mention of money. I wonder if a guy stood by the road nearby with a sign reading something like "Wait! I'll Buy It!" and carried on transactions with interested sellers on the...

    Zastava m57 Tokarev

I got one from Classic a couple of years ago that had the Glock-style trigger safety and the import mark hidden discreetly under the trigger guard. The gun was immaculate and a great shooter. A lot of people don't like the trigger safety, but I do.

Great Plains & Buffalo Bullet Advice?

Thanks for the responses! I wanted opinions, and I got them! ;) I guess I've entered this flirtation with conicals because my first muzzleloader hunt this year will be for wild hogs here in Florida. These animals are pretty tough and area I'll be hunting in is nothing but thick palmettoes. If a...

Great Plains & Buffalo Bullet Advice?

I've got an old .50 Lyman Deerstalker with a peep sight, and have been having great fun working up the best load for it. I finally settled on a .495 patched ball pushed by 70gr. of Goex 2f black. Pretty good accuracy and mild recoil. Anyway, lately I've been reading forum posts and watching...

Are you a collector or a shooter?

Same here. Most were bought used. The "keepers", although they might not be pretty, have had trigger jobs, function flawlessly, and hit where I'm aiming. They'll never be sold or traded away as long as I'm alive.

What's the achille's heel of firearms?

Savage MK-II .22 bolt-action rifles seem to have a chronic problem with weak C-clamp extractor springs and many owners complain of ongoing extraction issues, myself included. Many others also complain of problems with the magazines. The pre-Remington Marlin 39A is one of the finest rifles...

If you could build from scratch

I'd build a left-handed .22 bolt-action rifle with a buttstock-fed tubular magazine (like the Nylon 66 & Browning SA). I don't think such a rifle has ever been created before. In fact, the last left-handed .22 boltgun with a tubular magazine was a limited run by Mossberg in 1938.

Thinking about getting into BP hunting- help!

Seeing as how you are in the Florida Panhandle, I guess I can reply specifically, since I've hunted on public land there most of my adult life. A basic Hawken-style rifle is all you need there, since the chances of 500yd shots are pretty few and far between. The Florida FWC calls our archery...

    Lyman Deerstalker Florida Hog

This is the first animal I've ever shot at with a muzzleloader. Seeing how these hogs can be dangerous when provoked, I was rather worried until the smoke finally cleared and I could see she was down. That was the longest thirty seconds of my life! The backup pistol sounds like a good idea. I...

    Lyman Deerstalker Florida Hog

Thanks for the congrats, everybody! By the way, the "beautiful" wood on my rifle in the photo is some sort of optical illusion created by the early morning sun shining through tall grass. Actually, this wood is pretty plain and dark.

    Lyman Deerstalker Florida Hog

By the way, I forgot to mention that I wasn't hunting from a tree stand, or over bait. Just slipping along slowly and quietly and keeping a sharp lookout. The rifle wasn't resting on anything when I fired. Just offhand. Those Lyman peep sights are great!

    Lyman Deerstalker Florida Hog

Met up with this sow in the Myakka State Forest muzzleloader season last month. Thirty yard, head-on shot with a .50 cal PRB and 70gr of real black powder.

    Browning BLR

Any left-handed shooters replying to this thread? Um... yeah, didn't think so. Apparently, some of you prefer a boltgun to a BLR. Back in the day, us southpaws had basically one choice in a bolt-action rifle: Savage 110CL available only in 30-06, .270, or .243. Plus, we had almost no...

Could a sniper do this on purpose?

About twenty years ago I read the biography of Marine sniper Carlos Hathcock. There was one incident describing how he intentionally shot the front fork of a moving bicycle at 2,500 yards. According to the story, Hathcock spotted a 12 year old boy, apparently a Vietcong courier, delivering a...

Police Gun Buyback Events: Are You Ever Curious?

Our local police department recently held a gun buy-back event that was covered by all the local TV news media. 120 guns were collected. http://www.fmpolice.com/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=496 As the camera panned across the table, I could make out numerous long guns mixed in among the usual...

Yet again, the AR15 becomes the root cause

On TV right now: It's now being reported the the Muslim attacker called 911 during the attack and pledged his allegiance to ISIS. But hey, let's ban guns and keep the borders wide open!

    Last rifle kill

Last Friday morning my neighbor from just down the road called and said the wild hogs were back and tearing up his back yard again. He doesn't own a gun. So I grabbed my Browning BLR in 7mm-08 and rushed over there. There was a herd of about eight about 100 yards from the house. I could have...

.22LR ammo is now available, but where?

Here in Southwest Florida, it's basically a waste of time even looking for it at Walmart. The pawnshops and LGS's, on the other hand, sometimes have it at breathtaking prices. I stopped into a gun shop in Arcadia, Florida a few weeks ago and saw a pretty good stack of 50rd CCI Quiets behind...
