From what I have on hand:
Ruger 10/22
Remington 870 in 12ga. 20" IC rifle sighted bbl.
Ruger GP 100 4" in .357
Marlin 336
All of these are accurate enough, reliable and chambered for widely available calibers.
Only change I would make would be to swap a Fulton Armory M1A with an...
Would love for it to be a series of AR's that are available with A1 uppers and no tactical doo dads(other than being piston driven) at a reasonable price.
However it will probably be a tricked out mall ninja special.

If I was the seller I would be sleeping very well with an extra $850 under my pillow. This was an auction so the buyer knew exactly what he was paying.....;)
Makes me feel pretty good about the 2 1/2" 19-3 I put on layaway a few weeks ago for $380 OTD.
BTW- Mine has the absolute best...
.22LR firearm (handgun or long gun, doesn't matter)
12/20 ga. shotgun
Centerfire handgun .38spl or larger
Centerfire rifle .223 or larger
To me this is a bare bones set up for most people. You can go extremely low budget or as high end as you want, but with these 4 you can cover all the...
SKS
.30-30 Levergun in your flavor of choice
Springfield Scout Squad
Bolt-Action in .308
Any of these will do although Jeff Cooper already answered this question. A general purpose rifle is exactly the role a scout rifle was meant to fill.

I've been in your situation...sort of. Already had a .357 levergun and bought an AK a while back. Shot the AK a bunch, but never really warmed to it. I decided that for MY NEEDS the .357 backed up by a .30-30 and a Mosin-Nagant in 7.62x54 did everything I need to do so I sold the AK...
Could it be that the 1/16" groove you're seeing is the groove where the little shield is supposed to be?
Even without the shield in place, 40 rounds should not erode the top strap that much.
I am not as familiar with the scandium models so I could be wrong about the erosion part.

I'm 6'8" and 360 lbs. I pocket carry a j frame 90% of the time. The rest of the time I carry a 1911 in a Milt Sparks SSII. Just seems to work the best for me.
I also use a Maxpedition Jumbo for off body carry at times as well. Comes in handy when you have kids, most people dont' give...
Conventional wisdom says don't trust anything below 4" in bbl length. My opinion (and that's all it is) is that the 3" guns can run and run well. I do think that with them you run a higher risk of having some teething issues, but it's better than it was in the past.
My personal experience...
The Remington 20ga. Youth 870 is tailor made for this application. Already comes with a shorter LOP and can be had for less than $300.
It may be a bit lighter than the 12 ga. model, but shouldnt be anything she cant handle unless shes a leprechaun. My wife is 5'5" and 1-- ( we dont...
Within those distance parameters I would go with a red dot of some sort. Which one depends on your cost limits. A Burris fast fire would be a good option for such a small rifle and they are reasonably priced at $225-$250.

I practice defensive drills at least once a month and have shot IDPA for a few years now. I know that IDPA is not training, so I use it as stress inoculation and to test my gun handling ability. I consistenly score at the bottom of the guys that shoot every weekend, but way above the guys who...
I would let him scrounge for the components then teach him how to use my equipment under my supervision. Be nice to teach someone else and he may end up being a reloader himself before it's all over.

I prefer a set up like that on all my carry weapons. It helps to draw my eyes to the front sight (where they should be).
A few years back some gunwriter did an article where he had talked to an opthal-...opto-......eye doctor(who was also a shooter) about different eye-related issues and...
It is my understanding that the striker is completely cocked after you rack the slide and is released by pulling the trigger. It seems to me that disabling the grip safety on an XD is essentially like carrying a 1911 around with the grip safety pinned and no thumb safety.

If the Ruger revolver proves itself [I]and[I] it is cheaper than the SW equivalents, I would buy the Ruger.
Key issues here for me are performance and price. I won't pay the same price or more for the Ruger than I would the S&W. If Ruger undercuts S&W, say at Taurus prices, I would buy...
